I recently learned a new term that explains a somewhat perplexing habit of mine: revenge bedtime procrastination. According to the Sleep Foundation, “Revenge bedtime procrastination describes the decision to sacrifice sleep for leisure time that is driven by a daily schedule lacking in free time. For people in high-stress jobs that take up the bulk of their day, revenge bedtime procrastination is a way to find a few hours of entertainment even though it results in insufficient sleep.”
Staying up (far) too late is something I began doing as a new mom in order to find just a few moments to myself. Although my children are long grown, now a highly demanding career keeps me oh-so-busy all day long, so I’ve continued staying up late each night as something of a survival mechanism. Unfortunately, it shows on my face!
In addition to dark circles, I also suffer from one the worst consequences of too little sleep: under eye bags.
If you also suffer from under eye bags, but get plenty of shuteye, there are actually several causes which may contribute to their appearance. The Mayo Clinic says several other factors cause or even worsen their appearance, including: aging, fluid retention (especially on waking or after an especially salty meal), allergies, smoking, genetics (under-eye bags run in families, which sadly, is true in my case) and some medical conditions (including, but not limited to dermatitis, dermatomyositis, renal disease and thyroid eye disease).
While nothing short of surgery will permanently eliminate under eye bags, there are some products that can temporarily minimize the look of them. One of my latest discoveries is IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Bags Daytime Treatment. This under eye cream tightens the delicate skin under the eye, greatly reducing the appearance of under eye bags and even wrinkles.
How to use IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Bags Daytime Treatment
- Apply to clean, dry, bare skin. Only a tiny amount (1/4 of a pea) is needed for each eye (do not go overboard).
- Gently pat on underneath the eye and on the orbital bone, being very careful not to get too close to the eye.
- The cream takes 10-15 minutes to dry. Do not add makeup or moisturizer until it’s thoroughly dry.
- As soon as it’s dry, you will notice that skin appears tighter and smoother. And, puffiness is greatly reduced. If you’ve used too much, skin may feel tight.
Some notes and reminders about this product
I add moisturizer and then makeup after the cream is dry. This does not decrease the product’s effectiveness. And the effects last all day. But, as with all skincare products, remove completely before bed.
This product is designed for all skin types. However, if you have very dry or sensitive skin, try a test patch first. I experienced sun sensitivity the first time I used this. So, a moisturizer with a 30+ SPF is highly recommended.
The product’s instructions suggest that this can be applied over makeup as well. However, I tried that with both mineral makeup (powder) and liquid foundation. Neither was as successful as applying it to bare skin first.
IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Bags Daytime Treatment retails for $40 (across all locations) and I found it at Sephora, ULTA and on Amazon.
Now, I am off to get some much-needed beauty sleep!
