Cake Decorating Is Easy: Add Sprinkles & Glitter!

Cake decorating made easy? Add sprinkles and glitter!Baking and cake decorating have been beloved hobbies of mine since high school when I worked in a landmark area bakery. I learned more than a few tricks of the trade there, which I still use to this day.

Since my holiday dinners are usually celebrated buffet style, a beautiful display, portion control and serving ease are absolute essentials for all desserts. What fits the bill on all counts? Cupcakes, of course!

Cupcakes are also especially fun to decorate. When I worked in the bakery, I learned about airbrushing, piping, and creating frosting flowers. But, when time is at a premium, I rely on holiday sprinkles and glitter to add pizzazz to the dessert table.

Recently, I found Quality Sprinkles, a site dedicated to cake decorating essentials. The same bakery level themed sprinkles and food safe glitter are available to both individuals and businesses. So, you can by supplies buy the shaker… or the barrel!

This Christmas season, one of my favorites is Quality Sprinkles’ Holiday Glitter Stars, shown. The colors – gold, green and white – are sophisticated and holiday inspired, but still semi neutral. And, although they are tiny in size, they quickly take a plain cupcake to the next level.

Or, add a few stars to a plain white plate, to add a bit of extra oomph to your display.

Plus, because they are sugar free and gluten free, they are perfect for in-class school parties and events where food sensitivities and allergies could pose a problem. Retail $6.99

In addition to these charming stars, Quality Sprinkles offers many other holiday sprinkles styles, as well. A few of my top picks include the Sweet Hearts, Snowflakes, and even Unicorns.

Cake decorating made easy? Add sprinkles and glitter!Another cake decorating trick, and an easy way to add sparkle to your dessert table, is to use edible glitter.  Quality Sprinkles offers colorful edible glitter in traditional holiday colors, pictured, as well as beauties such as turquoise, sapphire, apple green and so many more. Cake decorating glitter is also sugar and gluten free.

And, in addition to cakes and cupcakes, edible glitter makes cookies dazzling enough to rival a Christmas tree! Retail $4.99

A note: Because these products are sugar free, they do not add any taste. And, a little goes a long way. So, some experimentation may be necessary. To see more options for all of your cake decorating needs, visit Quality Sprinkles.
