How to Turn Your Porch into a True Outdoor Room this Fall

How to Turn Your Porch into a True Outdoor Room this FallOn the East Coast, fall is just around the corner (even though, yes, it’s over 90 degrees today). And, as much as I hate to say goodbye to the lazy days of summer, I always love the “new beginnings” feeling that fall brings! The moment that Labor Day has come and gone, my house is decked with orange and gold leaves, rustic pumpkins, and others signs of the season. And these days, I have the changeover down to something of a science – sometimes it is as simple as swapping a bowl full of seashells for a bowl full of pinecones. Getting my outdoor space ready for fall entertaining requires a bit of effort. But, the novelty of outdoor fall gatherings, from bonfires to outdoor movie nights, more than outweighs the hard work. Here are some porch decorating tips to get you ready for a fall filled with friends, family and fun!

Fabulous Flooring. Start from the ground up. Outdoor rugs are visually warming and define a space (even a small one) providing a sense of place. All weather versions can be left outdoors on open air porches until the snows arrive. And the new washable rugs are divine! Wayfair has an incredible selection of outdoor rugs and you can easily shop by color, size, shape or price (just search by outdoor rug).

Snuggly Seating. Creating a cozy atmosphere outdoors starts with really comfortable seating. I just purchased Dubbin Outdoor Wicker Stacking Dining Chairs from Walmart, currently on major clearance, which are oh-so-comfy. But you may prefer traditional porch rockers or a heavenly porch swing.

If you don’t have the space (or the budget) for new furnishings, you can simply add comfy cushions and pillows to existing patio furniture. Marshall’s is one of my go-to stores for pillows of all shapes and sizes.

No seating? Bring the indoors out… at least temporarily! I often do this with dining chairs. Added to a long table draped with proper linens, it makes fall dining al fresco feel like a grand occasion.

Lighting Variety. Adequate lighting is absolutely essential and one area that is often overlooked. Choose different heights and vary the type of illumination for a cozy ambiance. Tea lights are extremely affordable and look best in masses. Strands of Edison bulbs (I love these solar powered strands) overhead add a charming bistro effect. And, fairy lights twined around potted tree branches provide a soft glow.

If you don’t mind a bit of DIY, gut an old thrift store chandelier (or two, depending on the size of your space) and add solar powered or battery-operated lights. Paint, decorate, or add sparkling crystals for a one-of-a-kind showstopper.

Let’s Stay Toasty Warm. For fall evenings, cozy chenille or plush fleece throw blankets are absolutely essential. When it gets really chilly, guest will appreciate a basket filled with spare mittens, gloves, scarves and hats.

Festive Decorations. This fall, pile on the pumpkins (real or faux), bring in buckets of mums, wooden crates, lanterns, and colorful bunches to cozy up your space. Straw bales are not only decorative, but offer mobile seating options (However, I would only use these on a deck, as straw bales are notoriously messy).
