The September issue of VOGUE recently arrived on my doorstep. In much the same way that I used to eagerly anticipate the jumbo “back to school issue” of Seventeen, I simple could not wait to open the oversized magazine! VOGUE never disappoints, and it was just stuffed with great new looks for fall and winter. One of the surprises? The return of kitten heels. And I for one, am thrilled.
In VOGUE’s recent article, “Kitten Heels Are the Fashion Crowd’s Favorite Shoe for Low-Key Polish,” author LAURA JACKSON says, “there is a slew of shoes vying for our attention right now. But the one pair that’s really ticking all the boxes for fall? Kitten heels. Yes, really… For podiatric comfort, style kudos, and low-key polish, there is no shoe better suited for your feet right now than a low slingback, pump, or mule.”
Nothing can replace the glam look of stilettos, but when I am on my feet for 8 hours a day (or more) at a tradeshow, for example, I truly need a more comfortable alternative. Apparently, I’m not the only one, because designers have flooded the market this season with kitten heels in every shape, size, color and pattern.
Marie Claire magazine considers the kitten heel part of “Fall 2023’s Shoe Trends Mark a Return to Classic Elegance” and explains, “Akin to a really great fitted blazer, slingback shoe styles—especially in a demure flat or kitten heel— will transcend all trends and seasons and look utterly polished paired with just about anything.”
And for a classic look, it’s true. The kitten heel offers the best of both worlds – the leg elongating, dressed-up look of a high heel… but crucially, the comfort and wearability of a ballet flat. Originally introduced in the late 1950’s for young teenaged girls, oh-so-wearable kitten heels were quickly adopted by women of all ages.

But the “classic” 1950s styles are (thankfully) not making a comeback. Instead, these heels have a distinctly modern feel. For example, Elle magazine author Meg Donohue showcases some wonderfully fashion-forward options from & Other Stories Pointed Slingback Pumps, to Burberry Jacquard Check Slingback Pump, to The Row Leather Pumps in “25 Pairs of Stylish Kitten Heels That Are Definitely Not Your Grandmother’s.”
