White Pumpkins for Fall!

White Pumpkins for fallLong before Joanna Gaines of Fixer Upper and her all-white-all-the-time mindset completely dominated our interior design consciousness, the concept of using white pumpkins for fall was already making inroads.

As far back as 2005, CBS News reported in White, is the New Orange for Pumpkins, Deborah Racicot, the executive pastry chef at Gotham Bar and Grill in New York said, “People who are throwing parties tend to buy them. They are looking for the coolest thing to make their party a little more chic…”

So, if you still are decorating for fall exclusively using autumn’s russet hues, maybe this is the year to add a dash of white… and especially ghostly white pumpkins?

I like white pumpkins as an alternative in certain rooms because orange, mustard, and green shades don’t harmonize well with the colors of some of my permanent furniture pieces. Plus, a little goes a long way in those vibrant colors. And (according to my kids, at least) I do sometimes tend to “over decorate.”

While I can’t possibly abandon the beautiful natural colors of fall for my Halloween decorating entirely, I do use them in measured doses and only in certain spaces. So, adding white provides me with the opportunity to indulge and decorate with gusto, festooning every room in the house.

Another reason I choose white pumpkins for fall is that they pair so well with natural elements like branches and berries. And, white pumpkins allow me to stretch my fall decorating from mid-September (general autumn décor), through October (Halloween), and even into November (Thanksgiving), with minor additions and subtractions for each holiday.

Using white for fall stretches my budget, too! In addition to ghostly pumpkins, a white palette for other décor elements allows me to reuse many of my existing pieces. I employ everything from china coffee pots, to footed cake stands for decorating, plus masses of candles in various heights.
