Much to the amusement – and occasional dismay – of my family, I love to rearrange the furniture. Most recently, I tackled the master bedroom. In addition to “new” cherry side tables (sourced for a mere $8 each at a charity shop!), I moved the fireplace mantle up from the basement, changed all of the artwork, and added a lovely new Laura Ashley comforter set.
If you’ve been reading Susan Said… WHAT?! for even a short time, you’ll know that I have something of a blue and white obsession. So, when it came time to choose a color scheme for the bedroom, the decision was easy. But, the choice of comforter was not.
After looking online for what felt like forever (realistically only a few months), I finally decided on the “Elise” comforter set in blue and white, shown.
This Laura Ashley comforter is widely available everywhere online from Overstock, to Wayfair, to Macys. I selected the 7-piece set because I never met a pillow that I didn’t love, but other combinations are available including a simple duvet cover.
Elise is a beautiful pattern that reminds me a bit of the French countryside. Fresh, crisp, light and airy, it actually feels like spring. And, should I choose to incorporate additional patterns in the room, such as a classic mattress ticking stripe, this lovely all-over floral and vine pattern will pair beautifully.
The classic blue and white color scheme has been around forever, most notably in gorgeous blue and white pottery, earthenware and porcelain. According to The Antiques Almanac, “The Chinese first produced porcelain painted in under-glaze blue during the 14th century, but it wasn’t until 300 years later in 1604 that a Dutch ship captured a Portuguese carrack, the Catharina, returning from a voyage to China loaded with 100,000 pieces of blue and white porcelains. The Dutch East India Company auctioned them off in Amsterdam, which prompted all the East India companies to begin trading in porcelains.”
In addition to gorgeous china (from decorative transferware wall plates to chinoiserie cache pots), it’s easy to add blue and white accents just right for a bedroom… even if the room currently features no blue and white. Simple suggestions include the addition of a pretty patterned throw, a freshly reupholstered footstool or vanity stool, an accent wall in paper or paint, a ginger jar lamp, or throw rug. Various color combinations, from pink/blue/white, to yellow/blue/white, to brown/blue/white can all be beautiful.
