With many schools operating virtually, K-12 sports cancelled, and extra-curricular clubs and activities nothing but a distant memory, kids will be spending more time at home this fall. What a perfect opportunity for a quick, budget kids bedroom makeover! As temps begin to dip, and children spend more time indoors, this space can become a true sanctuary during what can be a scary time.
Themes. First, get your child’s buy-in. There is nothing worse than slaving over a space and realizing he doesn’t really love the color blue, or would have preferred racecars to rodeos. Next, make sure that any theme-heavy pieces can be updated as your child grows. For example, a boat shaped bed is charming, but a comforter featuring sailboats can be covered with a solid duvet when his sailing phase inevitably passes.
Create a feature wall. A feature wall doesn’t have to be pricey and can be achieved simply. Add one boldly colored wall in an otherwise bland room. Or, try a single wall of wallpaper. The removable type that is currently so popular is perfect if you rent, as are removable, oversized vinyl wall stickers from Vinyl Craze. Personally, one of my favorite tricks is to add two bookcases on either side of the bed and drape a curtain behind the headboard. Instant character! Plus, this adds amazing storage.
Add a chandelier. Replacing an existing overhead fixture is simple. No overhead lighting? No problem. Hiring an electrician can be pricey, but you can drape the chandelier chain and plug the fixture into the wall socket. Or, use an existing chandelier that you’ve picked up at a tag sale or thrift shopping, which can be turned into a candle-iere. All ambiance. No fuss. And, no electricity required.
Think up. When my son was little, I affixed hundreds of tiny glow-in-the-dark stars to his ceiling to enhance his space-themed bedroom. It was adorable! Other ideas include removable wall stickers or a contrasting paint. Feeling really creative? Paint a restful cloud mural.
Top it off. A canopy provides a dreamy sense of place. A faux canopy can be created by hanging inexpensive sheers from the ceiling or by using a mosquito netting drape. A bed crown with drapes makes a daybed special.
Just add art. Beautiful, colorful and personal art makes a statement. Using inexpensive 8 x 10 dollar store frames, frame your child’s own masterpieces! Create a gallery wall that can be easily updated. Or, paint a chalkboard area (or an entire wall) to stimulate creativity. For kids who love to read, use wall cleats to showcase favorite books in a colorful and ever-changing display. (Bonus: placed near a beanbag, comfy chair, or nook, you might even encourage a bit of extra reading!)
Pops of color. Jazz up bland rooms with pops of color. In addition to an accent wall, try inexpensive bins and baskets or pillow covers (these are cheaper than pillows and are washable). You can also paint lampshades, small pieces of furniture or the backs of the bookcases.
