Activated Charcoal Powder for Teeth Whitening: Fact or Fiction?

Activated Charcoal Powder for Teeth Whitening: Fact or Fiction? Why is it that the things that taste so good can be so bad for you? I love my coffee in the morning, drink tea all day, and don’t even get me started on wine… But, drinking my faves for years has left my teeth stained. I periodically break down and use over-the-counter bleaching strips. But, I have never been able to position them correctly. Too low and some of the tooth is exposed. Too high, and I always burn my gums. In-office, professional dental whitening treatments are pricey. And, coconut oil pulling wasn’t effective for me. But, until now, I didn’t know there was another alternative. Have you heard about activated charcoal powder?

Brushing with absorbent activated charcoal powder draws out the stains from teeth, naturally.  And, BeLive Activated Charcoal Powder is a gentle alternative to whitening peroxides, harmful chemicals, and bleach that can cause sensitivity and damage.

How to use activated charcoal powder for teeth whitening

According to the dental professionals at, “The activated charcoal’s pores bind with rough parts on teeth, usually surface stains and plaque, making it easier to remove the yellowing substances. Once the charcoal has been given enough time to stick to your teeth, it can be removed and when it is, the mineral takes the plaque, food particles, and surface stains with it. This is how the activated charcoal succeeds in whitening teeth – by getting rid of surface stains in one fell swoop.”

Simply brush 1-3 minutes 3-4 times per week. The activated charcoal is safe to ingest. And, it is so gentle, even those with tooth sensitivity will be able to use it daily.

“However, because it latches onto grittiness found on the teeth, activated charcoal does not change the color of teeth that are deeply stained or naturally yellowing. For this, more drastic whitening measures need to be taken such as professional bleaching,” cautions

Also, the abrasiveness of the mineral can damage the enamel of your teeth if it’s scrubbed too roughly against them. So, you should be careful to only lightly graze teeth when applying the activated charcoal to avoid scratching.

Activated Charcoal Powder for Teeth Whitening: Fact or Fiction? My takeaway on Activated Charcoal Powder for Teeth Whitening

I love that this is a gentle alternative to peroxide strips. I have burned my gums enough times to dread using them again.

But, after using this product religiously twice a day for several days, I only saw a slight change in the color of my teeth. I am not sure if that’s because my stains go deep into my enamel (I do drink 4-5 cups of tea a day) or because I’ve haven’t given the product quite enough time to work. Either way, this is not an instant fix.

Also, it’s messy… really messy. Envision anywhere in your bathroom that toothpaste tends to fly. The mirror, the counter, the sink. Now, imagine it is all BLACK. (Luckily, it cleans up easily with one swipe of a Clorox cleaning wipe, but it’s a bit much to face before I leave for work early in the morning.)

And, it’s not very portable. The powder comes in a little tub (see photo). Since it’s roughly the texture and color of copier toner, I would never consider chancing it and carrying it in a suitcase (even in a Ziplock bag).

I think that this product, given more time, will continue to improve the color of my teeth. And, I believe that those with sensitive teeth and gums will truly appreciate a gentle alternative to harsh chemical teeth whitening options.

The BeLive Activated Charcoal Powder is available on BeLive on Amazon for just $10 and includes two free charcoal whitening strips.
