For the (fashionably) superstitious: the evil eye

I first noticed it this spring when WHIMSY staffer and financial wizard Cindy returned from a trip to Greece. The evil eye is everywhere! Before you panic, I actually mean the traditional blue and white talisman used to ward off evil.

Although I thought that the evil eye was a symbol exclusively from the Mediterranean, I found that there are numerous believers in the symbol’s powers throughout the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Europe and even in the Americas.

Basically, the evil eye as we know it is a disk or ball of concentric blue and white circles which represents the malicious gaze of someone intent on doing harm. Throughout history, the talisman is believed to not only provide protection from the evil doer, but to actually rebound the evil back to them! Evil eyes are often incorporated into beads and worn as bracelets and necklaces. They also are hung within homes to protect the residents and even in cars to keep passengers safe.

Ar one of favorite contest sites (MadBerries at InTouch magazine) I recently found a fun, fringed scarf by Raj whose print incorporates the evil eye. I later found it for sale for only $29 at Shalcy Fashion.

Since I didn’t win the scarf, I started to surf a bit and found a whole website of clothing that incorporates the evil eye including loads of cute and very inexpensive T’s at Evil Eye Clothing.

But my favorite find is a Judith Ripka 18k yellow gold evil eye pendant with a bezel set black diamond surrounded by blue diamonds and pave white diamonds at Judith Ripka Part of the Lucky collection, this gorgeous piece will set you back $1,600, but hey, safety has no price, right?
