She Shed Inspiration: Dreamy Spaces and Secret Hideaways

During the pandemic, many of us were simultaneously working from home, overseeing online learning for kids, keeping up with the house, and… trying not to lose our minds!  With travel out of the question, an escape was very much in order.  Enter, the she shed.

Although the pandemic is (thankfully) in our rear view mirror, the need for a she shed has in no way abated. A she shed offers the perfect place to retreat when the conflicting demands of life all become just a little too much.

She sheds come in many configurations, sizes and levels of “grandeur.” And frankly, some she shed inspiration I’ve found on Pinterest are nicer than my actual house!

The antidote to the traditional “man cave,” a she shed can be used as a home office, a crafting or artistic space, a unique spot to entertain the girls, a yoga studio, or just a place to read and dream in peaceful (and much-needed!) solitude.

Wondering how to get started? If you already have a garden shed or other small structure in your yard, you are way ahead of the game. If not, sheds can be purchased online, delivered and installed easily. They start at about $2000 and go up from there. But, if you’re handy, a DIY wooden structure from The Home Depot can be had for under $1000!

Note: Pay special attention to a shed’s windows and/or skylights. Many sheds have no windows at all, which necessitates leaving the doors open when in use for natural light. Windows or skylights can be installed in existing structures, of course. But, when purchasing new, it’s worth the extra expense to have adequate windows already in place. Or, replace solid doors with French doors, to allow maximum natural light.

Next, you need to tend to practical matters such as insulation (depending on your climate), running electricity (which should always be done by a professional), and paint. Then, you can turn to the fun part – decorating!

A she shed is a truly personal expression of style. If your home is a compromise (taking into consideration a partner’s taste in furnishings, as well as the needs of children or pets) this is the opportunity to really let loose! A classic coastal style may provide you with a Zen retreat. A riot of color and pattern may spark creativity. Or, a soothing palette of pastels and heaps of vintage finds may be your heart’s desire. Whichever style you choose, make it charming, make it fun, make it yours.

So many of these are darn cute! Where we are, they’d be broken into and stripped bare. We just had our fifth breakin they often come with burglar tools like crowbars, etc. It must be amazing for people who can live somewhere they can do this and not have that happen to them. Many cities and towns are now approving ADUs, too, reminds me of she sheds but with plumbing etc.!
