By now, everyone knows that the Pantone Color of the Year is Classic Blue. Adding a dash of this fresh, clean navy blue is the perfect way to freshen up your home’s interior for the start of a brand new decade. Figuring out just how to add classic blue, however, can be something of a challenge.
Although this color is considered “trendy,” I’ve long been a fan of navy. And, a few years back, I began a campaign to banish the boring beige that ran rampant throughout my house, and replace it with crisp blue and white.
And, I am well on my way! My kitchen, dining room and master bedroom have all recently been updated to navy and white. (Next up: the powder room.) Here are some of the tricks that have worked for me:
Using Classic Blue in the Dining Room
According to the WebstaurantStore (the world’s largest online restaurant supply store) paying attention to the psychology of color is of paramount importance in a dining space. Some colors, such as red, actually increase hunger. However, blue “is not commonly found naturally in food, and it can cause you to lose your appetite. Additionally, if you have bright blue walls, the shade of blue can reflect onto your food and make it look less appetizing.”
To add classic blue in the dining room, without a negative impact on your next dinner party, try covering your dining chairs. When not in use, the color is right on trend. And, when hosting an event, the color will not make a visual impact. This is an easy project to complete – all you need is fabric, a staple gun and a pair of scissors. My husband and I completed the task in just a few hours and breathed new life into our dining chairs.
An area rug is another great option for a dash of color. A muted floral or traditional Persian style will stand the test of time.
Steer clear of too much blue in dishware. Instead, try yellow, which, according to House Beautiful, is proven to stimulate appetite. Yellow pairs beautifully with navy, for a classic French country look, as well.
Add Blue in the Living Room or Den
With a strong shade such as Classic Blue, a little goes a long way. Think in terms of accenting your existing space, rather than completely overhauling the room. One of my personal favorites is a plush throw in deep navy made by Marine Moon, a company known for its high quality throws, blankets, mattress pads and pillows.
You can also create a statement piece. Painting one piece – a side table, display cabinet or bookcase – will make an instant, and dramatic, change to your space.
If you’re not quite ready to take the plunge, try painting the backside only of a built-in bookcase, leaving the exterior and shelving white. This creates a spectacular “frame” for your treasured display pieces. And, when you tire of the look, simply repaint.
What to avoid? A major investment, such as a sectional. Instead try toss pillows, which can easily be swapped out, or slipcovers.
Try Classic Blue in the Bathroom
In the bathroom, paint is your best friend. The neutrality of white porcelain fixtures allows frequent updates (just ask my husband!). For smaller spaces, a single feature wall or a repainted vanity is lovely. Ready to go big? Paint the entire space for a wonderfully crisp look.
Or, add navy towels and rug to an all white space (just be sure to wash new towels separately at first – I speak from experience!). A new shower curtain, if you have a tub, is another quick update. I adore a trellis or lattice pattern, but many blue and white options are available. Try Bed, Bath and Beyond for a wide selection of shower curtains in navy and white, including everything from classic stripes, to kitschy nautical-inspired designs.
Stay away from replacing entire walls of tile unless you are truly ready to commit. Re-tiling, even just a floor, is a pricey endeavor.
How to Use Blue in the Kitchen
Since blue is an appetite suppressant, using blue in the kitchen is tricky. My own white kitchen features a navy blue island with a butcher block top. It contrasts beautifully with the white cabinetry and white countertops, without overpowering the space.
I also have a wooden hutch in the kitchen that showcases my collection of mismatched blue and white china. The pretty designs, from English transferware, to Delft, to more modern blue and white basket patterns, add visual punch to the open shelving. The warmth of the wood keeps it from reading as “cold.”
Avoid large kitchen appliances in blue. While a navy Aga cooker with bright brass trim is absolutely stunning, it’s also a rather permanent fixture. (Although, to be fair, you can re-enamel at Blake and Bull.)
Other Ways to Add Classic Blue to Your Home’s Interior
- Paint a stairwell and add a gallery wall. Gilt and gold frames are a striking contrast to deep, rich navy.
- Chinese porcelain is a classic that never loses its appeal. Try vases, bowls, urns, decorative wall plates and more in any space.
- Drapes add a large swath of color. If using floor to ceiling drapes, use a pattern to avoid overwhelming the space. Blue ticking, stripes, and florals are easy to find in any price range.
- Wallpaper is a major investment, in terms to cost to install. But, new peel and stick wallpaper eliminates the need to hire a professional and can be removed with no damage to your walls (a plus for renters!).
- Don’t overlook a simple comforter swap. I recently changed ours in the master bedroom for a completely new look.
- Try blue or blue and white porcelain knobs on kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, or small occasional tables.
