When you envision a gemstone, what do you see? A sparkling cushion cut diamond? A faceted miner’s cut ruby? Or maybe, you see something a bit more… natural? Today’s gemstones go far beyond the intricately cut, highly polished pieces that we’ve come to associate with traditional jewelry. Artisan pieces, created using raw gemstones, geodes, crystals, and partially polished gems are a stunning alternative.
These raw gemstones and organic pieces run the gamut and include beautiful options such as drusy agate, tektite, blackstone, kyanite, turquoise, and amethyst, among others. These stones also are available in a wide variety of sizes – from the size of a baby’s fist to a tiny flake – and configurations – from wire wrapped, to caged, to sliced.
Of course, cut and polished gems won’t be disappearing anytime soon (according to the International Gem Society, “the lapidary arts [gem cutting and polishing], traces its roots back almost 1,000,000 years ago.”) But, the relaxed, sexy look of uncut and raw gems is a wonderful option this season.
These looks are real showstoppers and pair best with very simple clothing pieces (a sleek little black dress, a white off the shoulder peasant blouse, or a strapless top). Here is some inspiration to get you started!
