My teenaged daughter has her first “real job” lined up this summer at our state Office of Volunteerism. She is understandably a bit nervous, but not for the reasons you might think… she’s worried about what to wear.
As a college-bound high school senior, her closet is filled with school uniforms, athletic gear for rowing, and outfits more suitable for cruising the mall, hitting the movies or taking in a summer concert, than working in an office building!
She is only 18, and certainly didn’t want to invest in anything “frumpy” (no matter how office appropriate). So, to build a proper work wardrobe, we started with this simple black dress from Aidoo.
And, what a stylish way to begin! It is the perfect combination of work-appropriate and fashion-forward. The dress is slim fit, to show off her dynamite figure, but is long enough to be considered conservative. The keyhole cutout adds interest, without becoming overtly sexy. And, the metal self-belt and side accents add interest, taking what could be just a plain dress, and elevating it to one she will reach for again and again.
One of the best features of this dress is just how adaptable it is. My daughter can toss on a jacket or cardigan (usually mine) depending on the temperature. And, it looks equally good with heels for evening or ankle strapped flats for daytime.
The dress is 65% cotton and 35% polyester and the material is somewhat thin. Paired with black or off-black stockings, it is not an issue. If you plan on nude hose or bare legs, I would suggest a black half-slip, just in case.
Also, the dress requires some special handling. Hand wash with cold water and line dry — or take the easy route and send it to the dry cleaners (like I do!). Amazon Prime Retail: $18.90
