20 Simple Summer into Fall Decorating Ideas

20 Simple Summer-into-Fall Decorating IdeasWhile summer is still in full force (over 90 degrees again today!), a trip to the mall indicates that fall is just around the corner. And, as summer winds down and the first hints of fall actually appear, it’s the perfect time to give your home a seasonal refresh. Transitioning décor from bright, splashy summer vibes to cozy autumn warmth doesn’t have to be a complete overhaul. In fact, with just a few thoughtful touches, you can start by blending the best of both seasons. Whether you’re holding on to bright, sunny days or eagerly awaiting crisp nights, these 20 summer-into-fall decorating ideas will help you ease into autumn… in style.

Swap Bright Florals for Earthy Hues

A few years ago, I purchased stunning drapes in a bold hydrangea pattern for both the living room and dining room. While I absolutely love the look from April through August, as September inches closer, I will replace them with solid navy velvet versions.

The same goes for pillow covers and other textiles. Replace summery pastels and brights with more fall-appropriate options, ideally (if these marry with your existing color scheme) in burnt orange, mustard yellow, olive green, and deep burgundy tones.

Toss on Lightweight Throws

Adding a soft cotton or light wool throws in fall colors to sofas and chairs requires zero effort. And, not only does a throw cozy up a space visually, it’s also wonderfully snuggly for unexpectedly cool mornings or evenings.

Try Natural Textures

Although I use wicker all year long (baskets, baskets… everywhere!), in fall, I amp it up even more. And, you can too. Wicker trays and baskets can be worked into into almost any style décor. They’re easy to find in every home interiors store and need not be pricey to look good.

You may also want to consider jute rugs and wood accessories, which will create an earthy fall vibe. (I am especially partial to wooden boxes in all shapes and sizes. These make excellent “risers” for other décor, or can be used stacked alone.)

Use Neutral Pumpkins

While I love an authentic bright orange “Halloween” pumpkin, I recognize that not every home can absorb that kind of color shock. Luckily, there are so many variations now available! In addition to creamy white and sage green, it’s easy to find faux pumpkins in almost every shade of the rainbow, from shell pink, to sky blue, to gold.

Incorporate Natural Seasonal Greenery

Add eucalyptus, dried grasses, or wheat to vases and centerpieces. Branches cut from your yard create wonderfully sculptural arrangements. And, don’t forget bowls of pinecones!

Light Scented Candles

In the summer, I favor citrusy or “fresh linen” scents. However, as September approaches, I am ready to unearth my fall stash of apple pie, pumpkin spice and cinnamon vanilla. Yum!

Swap out your Front Door Wreath

If you have a go-to fall wreath already, take it out and make any needed repairs or additions (I am not really sure what happens to my wreaths during the course of the year. Although they are carefully store in wreath bags, they always look a bit worse for the wear when I pull them out for the season!) So, yours may also need a quick refresh, a new ribbon, or the addition of some new florals.

Add Cozy Outdoor Lighting

This summer has been so darned hot, I’ve not been able to use my outdoor space as much as I would like. So, I hope to really get some mileage out of it once the temps dip in September. To get ready, I’ve added new lighting (strings of Edison bulbs which are solar powered), as well as large lanterns (with battery operated pillar candles). Both provide a warm glow and ensure no one trips on the somewhat uneven brick patio!

Display the Fruits of the Season

Apple picking is something of a big deal here on the East Coast. Not only is it oh-so-fun (a hayride to the orchard!), you also leave with enough apples to start your own farm stand. Bowls of red apples in the kitchen are a simple nod to the fall harvest (and, really, who doesn’t love fall décor you can eat?!).

Bring in Copper Accents

Given my obsession with all things French, country and cottage-y, it’s no surprise that I love a good copper piece to bring fall into the kitchen. The glow is so warm! Copper (the heavy-duty kind, made in France, with pretty brass handles and sensible tin lining) is pricey. But vintage bargains can be found. Or simply choose less expensive bits to hang for décor purposes only.

Create Transitional Floral Arrangements

The summer garden may be almost spent, but you can still mix late summer florals (Rose of Sharon, purple coneflowers, black-eyed Susans) with staked mini pumpkins or gourds.

Introduce Buffalo Check or Plaid Textiles

I have to admit, I use buffalo check pieces all summer long (pillow covers, table runner, tea towels). The key is the color combination. My crisp blue and white looks fresh for spring and summer, but paired with oranges and gold, is oh-so-autumn. Start small with a throw blanket, runner, or napkins.

Switch Outdoor Cushions

Because my outdoor space is usable until early November, I have two sets of cushions for the all-weather wicker furniture. A nautical print welcomes guests during the blissful days of summer. But in fall, I switch over to more subdued shades of navy, which coordinates nicely with rust, cream and green throws and pillows.

Create a Welcoming Fall Entryway

A little change can make a big first impression! In addition to a wreath, consider a seasonal doormat, fall-inspired planter, or rustic bench. Items need not be expensive! For example, I have some vintage wooden wine crates that, when stacked, form a “bookcase” of sorts for rotating outdoor décor.

Change Candlesticks

In the summer, all of my candles are white. But, as fall nears, I like to switch them to darker shades including navy blue. The very same crystal candlesticks that looked so light and summery with white candles, get a whole new look when the tapers are changed. Bonus – this is so budget friendly!

Add a Touch of Velvet

As I mentioned above, my fall/winter drapes are dark navy velvet. But you don’t need to commit to such a big purchase (or the effort of switching them out). Pillow covers, velvet lined throws, table runners, and even velvet pumpkins bring a touch of cozy luxury.

Don’t Forget the Bedroom

I have a beautiful blue and white Laura Ashley print comforter and a white quilt. In spring and summer, the floral pattern is on the top. In fall and winter, the plain white goes on top. Add a few toss pillows and – voila! A whole new look, with no added expense, and no effort, other than making the bed. (This works at Christmas too, when the holiday pillow covers make their appearance.)

Set Up a Hot Beverage Station

I must admit, I need an at-home coffee station year-round (living life fully caffeinated is non-negotiable in my house!). But, if you don’t already have one, consider setting up a cozy nook in the kitchen with mugs, tea, cocoa, or coffee. Perfect for those crisp autumn mornings.
