Is one of your New Year’s Resolutions to save more money? If so, you are not alone! According to Anna Fleck of Statistica, “Planning to save more money is once again top of mind for many Americans making resolutions for 2025. Data from a recent survey by Statista shows that one in five U.S. adults are committing to the financial goal.”
And, one of the easiest ways to save money is to cut down on small expenses, such as a daily brew house coffee, so that the larger (and unavoidable) ones are a bit easier. Popularized by author David Bach The Latte Factor concept is simple. Small amounts of money spent on a regular basis cost us far more than we imagine.
How much? Forbes magazine explains it clearly, “Small amounts of money invested over time turn into a mountain of cash… Let’s assume $3.50 a day at 6%. That’s exactly what Vanguard did in a recent article. The result over 30 years was $106,000.”
Of course, a really great cup of coffee from my favorite barista is a major treat, and one I can’t give up entirely. (Anyone who has known me longer than 5 minutes knows that I REALLY love my coffee.) But, the numbers don’t lie. So, creating a home coffee station is a foregone conclusion.
The coffee bar / station is a relatively new addition to home design. (Personally, I credit the national obsession with Starbucks.) And, for coffee aficionados, it’s quickly become a must-have.
A high-quality coffee maker
No skimping on the machine. Get the best you can afford because it’s going to get a workout! A fabulous French press, espresso machine, or cold-brew (my son’s new fave) are great alternatives.
A full selection of delicious, flavored syrups
Although I personally don’t chose sweet coffee every day, it makes a nice change occasionally. And, I have found that The Restaurant Store has the largest selection of fun options including yummy hazelnut, caramel, and French vanilla.
Sugars
Different types of sugars (raw, cinnamon, brown) provides a nice array of choices. Using vintage shakers adds visual interest. Or, you can choose half a dozen of the same for uniformity. Shakers look professional and (bonus!) keep your coffee station area clean.
Your favorite mugs or cups
I keep my beautiful blue and white mugs out for display. But frankly, in the wee hours of the morning, I tend to favor the tall Dollar Store mugs my kids bought me when they were little, since they hold 2 cups at once.
Spoons or stirrers
A mug full of hand stamped ones sourced on Etsy are charming and make me smile. Or try chocolate coffee spoons for a little boost.
Great coffee!
I am obsessed with Compass Coffee, but check out your go-to local roasters and bring your favorites home. Although premium roasts seem pricey at the cash register (compared with grocery store prices) when you work out the cost-per-cup it is more than worth it!
A bean grinder
Dollar for dollar, one of the best investments you can make for your coffee bar. For example, a Cuisinart bean grinder is under $20 on Amazon, and will provide the freshest cup of joe. (Plus, it makes the kitchen smell heavenly!)
All of these elements should be corralled in a dedicated space. A cubby or nook on the counter will work if you are pressed for space. Or, choose a specially designated free-standing piece of furniture such as a hutch (eliminating a 1980’s “bill paying station desk” in the kitchen and replacing with an armoire is a great use of space). The key is to have everything you need readily available, which means that allowing enough space is essential.
A tray of some sort to hold all of the bits and pieces is also very helpful. A tray or multi-tiered rack visually reads as one piece, so, even a full tray cuts down on the “visual clutter.”
