Election stress. Pandemic fatigue. The return of the dark days of winter. Sometimes, it all feels like too much. Since “dressing up” for work has been almost completely abandoned in my office for the foreseeable future, I’ve been relying on some tried-and-true, casual and comforting favorites as the temps begin to dip. Top of my list? The return of the UGG boot for 2020. Considered wildly fashionable in the early oughts, this sheepskin, shearling-lined boot is back and better than ever. Basically, wearing these boots is like wearing a hug. (And frankly, who couldn’t use that right about now?)
Although UGG boots gained popularity in the USA in the early 2000’s, they actually have a long, and interesting, history. In the 1960’s, Australian surfers created early versions of the boot for post-surf wear. And, the UGG brand was founded by Aussie surfer Brian Smith in the 1970’s, who, upon relocating to California, began selling them on the beach to the local surfer community.
Growth of the company was slow until 2000, when Oprah Winfrey declared the UGG boot one of her “Favorite Things.” This marked a major turning point for the brand, which was instantly catapulted into the public eye.
Adopted by entertainment and style tastemakers from Beyoncé to Kate Moss, the UGG boot quickly became a must-have look for women of all backgrounds and ages, from pre-teens to suburban housewives.
Although there are some who insist that the look never truly went away, due to the pandemic, the UGG boot has experienced a major resurgence. And, it’s easy to see why!
The sheepskin is soft. The shearling lining is warm. And, no shoe or boot is more comfortable for all day wear. The versatility, too, is a perfect fit for 2020. Pair this style with everything from joggers to leggings, casual long skirts to jeans.
