Ahhhh… jewelry. I adore over-the-top looks such as multiple ropes of pearls, oversized statement necklaces, and chunky beads. But, as summer’s temperatures skyrocket, bigger isn’t always better. Often, it’s simply too hot to bother with large, heavy necklaces. Of course, that doesn’t mean I go jewelry-free. Instead, I indulge in delicate pieces that still pack a visual punch like the . And, this summer, I discovered the perfect way to combine one of the season’s hottest jewelry trends (earthy and uncut semi-precious gemstones) with lightweight, wearable pieces – a Wire Wrapped Gemstone Necklace from Designs by Nature Gems!
Designs by Nature Gems is the brainchild of artist Laura Sultan. Based in Canada, Sultan’s lifelong love of the beauty of nature and organic forms is evident in every single piece. The incredibly detailed wire wrapped gemstone necklaces have such a vine-like quality; it’s almost as if the wire somehow grew there on its own!
Each piece takes Sultan up to four hours to design and create. Inspiration can take the form of a leaf, a feather, a bird’s nest, or even a spider’s web.
There are over 200 selections including wire wrapped gemstone necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets. The pieces feature semi-precious gems such as garnet, pearl, peridot, aquamarine, and so many more – Sultan has assembled a veritable rainbow of gemstones.
With all of these amazing choices, it’s almost impossible to pick favorites. But, I do have three lust-worthy wire wrapped gemstone necklaces that are at the very top of my own wish list.
First, the Amazonite Necklace “Something Blue,” shown above, features finely wrapped antique bronze wire which surrounds a small Amazonite stone. All material is nickel-free and hypoallergenic. The wire wrapping uses antique bronze wire with an inner core that is 100% copper. And, I absolutely love the tranquil blue-green color of this stone. Retail: $27.36
A very close second is the Green Aventurine “Sweet 16” necklace, pictured above. The shape of this stone is just lovely. And, Aventurine is a stone I was unfamiliar with until I fell in love with this necklace. From what I discovered, most Aventurine originates in India, but I am glad this little bit made it all the way to North America! The stone is delicately wrapped in nickel-free, hypoallergenic, sterling silver-plated copper core wire. Retail $18.96
Rounding out my list is the charming “Quartz Point Pendant” shown below. Clear quartz is one of my favorites (I have collected hundreds of clear quartz “Cape May Diamonds” over the years). The juxtaposition of the raw, uncut, and unpolished gem with the whisper-thin wire wrap is simply stunning! The wire wrap is 14k gold over copper core wire. All material is nickel-free and hypoallergenic. Retail: $22.75.
