Fashion Trend Hits (and Misses) for Fall

Fashion trend hits and misses for fall. Long, midi-length skirts were on every runway! Shown here are Balenciaga Fall 2013 (left) and Proenza Schouler Fall 2013 (right). This morning when I woke up I realized that there was the definite tang of fall in the air. Fall is one of my favorite seasons (and not just because the kids go back to school!). It’s a season for starting fresh (remember those pristine white notebooks and lethally sharp new #2 pencils?). And, nothing is better than starting fresh with a new wardrobe boost and a few major fashion trend hits!

This season is one of contrasts and some seriously outlandish fads. But, the addition a few real, very wearable trends will keep you looking fashion-forward… and not like a fashion-victim!

Top Picks for Fall

Longer hemlines. Reminiscent of 1990’s skirts, hemlines have plummeted. This is great news for the sensibly-chic, because (at least here on the East Coast) fall can be cold! Longer hemlines are also a nice visual break from super-short summer minis and look especially lovely in traditional fall wools and tweeds.

Fashion trend hits and misses for fall. All-black is the simplest way to capitalize on the monochromatic trend this fall, but you can also try something a little more daring like this ensemble from Guy Laroche in raspberry.

Monochromatic dressing. A trend I am thrilled to revisit. Again, in a nod to the 1990’s, monochromatic dressing is back! Head-to-toe black is the obvious choice, but this fall, you may also want to try winter white, claret, or trendy green.

Statement coats. If you can only make one major purchase this fall, make it a long coat. It’s easy to make it special because coats – in all shapes, colors, and styles – will abound. Long coats have been harder to find in the past few years, so indulge that pent-up need for a cape/coat, graphic print, oversized tweed, or royally embellished stunner.

Also Rans

  • Over the top embellishment… everywhere
  • Plaid, plaid, plaid!
  • Luxurious velvet dresses

I’m simply ignoring…

  • Rounded shoulders (can I just say… ughh!)
  • Ostrich feathers
  • Black and white fur

Great post! Fall is my absolute favorite style season too! I also love the longer hemlines that I’m seeing (I mean mini’s weren’t comfortable to wear even back in the 80’s when I had long lean legs & youth on my side!) and the monochromatic look always looks so chic to me. They can keep the feathers & fur….I only like those when they’re on the original owners & not humans!
