I first noticed them at Christian Dior. Then, at Cynthia Rowley. Even, Dolce & Gabbana! For Spring, the runways were filled with ladylike 1950s inspired skirts. Floaty and romantic – often in ultra-feminine florals – these skirts are a welcome break from the ubiquitous pencil skirt of the last few seasons.
Full can be flattering! How to wear 1950s inspired skirts
Wearing a full skirt – whether A-line, softly draped, or a full-on circle skirt – can be tricky. A minimalist approach including a fitted blouse, vest or jacket is best to balance the excessive fabric of the skirt. Likewise, I play it safe and pair floral prints with solid tops. I know that mixing prints is hot (Mondo is my top choice on Project Runway All Stars, after all) but when I mix prints I don’t look chic, just like I got dressed in the dark.
Length is another concern with a full skirt. Too short and you look like a cheerleader, Catholic schoolgirl, or possibly a figure skater. Too long and you resemble Laura Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie. I suggest slightly longer than mid-thigh to several inches above the knee – perfect for those of us who’ve passed the 3-0 mark.
Above are some pieces for inspiration – but take note – you’ll be seeing these charming 1950s inspired skirts in your local mall soon!
