One of the trends I’m very excited to embrace for fall / winter 2011 is the peplum. As a child of the 80’s, peplums are nothing new to me. But those stiff, structured creations sported by a bevy of Dynasty beauties are a world away from this season’s “new” peplum waist.
Designers have softened the look (although I admit, the runways did have a Judy Jetson pieces). However, on the whole, a more flirty, feminine look prevails.
The key to successfully wearing a peplum (especially if you are not 6’ tall and model thin) is to go for subtlety. No enormous drapes of fabric. No asymmetry. And absolutely no contrasting colors.
Here are my top ways to incorporate the trend – from blouses and jackets for every day, to dresses for work, plus stunning evening wear for all of those upcoming special events.
- BCBG Max Azria strapless dress with peplum waist ($378 – bcbg.com)
- Peplum dress ($199 – karenmillen.com)
- Stop Staring stop staring dress ($170 – modcloth.com)
- Oasis short sleeve peplum top (£30 – houseoffraser.co.uk)
- McQ by Alexander McQueen peplum jacket (£105 – julesb.co.uk)
- Hobbs peplum jacket (£199 – johnlewis.com)
