Big, bold cocktail rings. Okay, has enough been said about them? Because I simply can’t resist! Every magazine that I open this season – from fashion glossies such as InStyle magazine to the jewelry trades publications including Modern Jeweler – are shouting about the return of the bold cocktail ring.
According to “Wise Geek” the cocktail ring became popular to wear during Prohibition in the 1920’s at illegal cocktail parties. Not only was the wearer drinking forbidden liquor, they were flaunting it with style.
Thankfully, today we don’t need to attend a cocktail party in order to enjoy these gorgeous statement pieces. Large and colorful cocktail rings work equally well with a pair of skinny jeans, tank top and killer stilettos on the weekends as they do with a conservative suit and pearls for the office.
And, there are so many options! A wide variety of cocktail rings encompass all the colors of the rainbow and virtually every style imaginable. One of my personal favorites this season is a drusy ring. This sparkling semi-precious gemstone has a natural surface texture that resembles spilled sugar. (In fact, drusy is the result of dissolved silica deposited in porous quartz.)
If drusy isn’t your style, sleek cabochon stones in precious or semi-precious varieties offer a contemporary vibe. And of course, traditional faceted gems never disappoint!
Because they are so noticeable, oversized cocktail rings offer another bonus – they instantly update last year’s styles – a real plus for fashionistas in this challenging economy. No doubt about it, this is one trend I am jumping on.
No budget? No problem! You may be able to “shop” your mother’s (or your grandmother’s!) jewelry box for funky vintage finds.
Time to ring in Spring!
