ThredUp: The Easy Way to Resell Clothes and Accessories

ThredUp: A "Set It and Forget It" Way to Resell Clothes and AccessoriesI’d been lulled into complacency by a gorgeous custom closet that maximized space so well, I had ample room for… well, everything. But, do I really need 26 handbags? 39 pairs of shoes? 63 sweaters? No! My closet is now overflowing and this year, I am finally doing something about it.

At a minimum, my goal is create a closet that doesn’t give me an anxiety attack every time I step inside. Instead, I want breathing room between hanging items. Less of an avalanche each time I reach for folded pieces. And maybe I’ll even have space to hang some artwork and display my all-time favorite pieces in a museum style, like my inspo picture above.

Although I don’t technically need many of the items in my closet, they still have a lot of life left. And actually, many of the more “noticeable” pieces have barely been worn (How many times do I have just the right outfit that begs for a cotton candy pink wicker top handle bag?). So, after a massive purge, thi it all went out the door to ThredUp, which is an incredible resource for both sellers and buyers.

Founded in 2009, ThredUp is one of the leading resale fashion marketplaces with distribution centers in the United States and Europe. Since its inception, ThredUp has processed more than 137 million items from approximately 55,000 different brands.  (If you can’t find it at ThredUp, you won’t find it anywhere!)

And, selling with ThredUp is so easy. I don’t have to research and write descriptions, take photos or make endless trips to the post office to ship. I just filled my Clean Out Bag (provided by the company) and sent it in. They inspect the items, photograph them and list them with smart pricing and search-ready tools. I sit back and watch my balance climb, which I can take as a payout or store credit.

If you’re ready to clear out your closet, there are a couple of things to note before you get started. First, processing time is 4-5 weeks, so you do need to plan ahead seasonally. For example, even though the snow is still deep at my house, my bag contained spring and summer faves. I held back sweaters and cold weather items, which I plan to send in August.

Next, items that aren’t listed get donated or recycled. So, if you aren’t willing to take that chance, this isn’t the platform for you.

Finally, sellers earn up to 80% of selling price. I consider this a great deal, since ThredUp does all of the work. But, if you want to make 100% of the selling price, listing items on eBay or another reseller may be a better fit.

Learn more about the process and get started at ThredUp. Now that I have all this closet space, maybe I can go shopping (just kidding!).
