If you have a small home, own a bit bit too much holiday décor, or just want to try something new, look up. A chandelier is more than simply a light fixture. It’s the “jewelry” of a room. Whether it’s adorned with sparkling crystals or a rustic farmhouse design, a chandelier can take center stage in your seasonal décor.
With a few creative embellishments, a chandelier takes center stage for any celebration. From birthdays, to Thanksgiving, to Christmas (and everything in between) here are some easy, fast, and inexpensive ways to transform your chandelier into a festive focal point… all year long.
For Birthdays: Think Bright and Joyful
Birthdays are the perfect time to add a dash of whimsy to your chandelier and reinforce any birthday theme. I’ve decorated my own chandelier with everything from colorful Dollar Store paper streamers, to sea creature cutouts, to Pokémon figurines for the many, many children’s birthday parties I’ve held over the years.
You can drape colorful ribbons from the arms of the fixture, allowing them to hang down at varying lengths for a playful, party-ready look. Or attach lightweight balloons (making sure to keep them away from the bulbs!). Hang paper lanterns, faux flowers, tassels, or crystals for a more sophisticated take.
For a milestone birthday, you can even personalize the look. Hang a lifetime of photos clipped to decorative ribbon (I use miniature clothespins from Michaels Crafts).
For Fall, Halloween, and Thanksgiving: Go Warm and Rustic
As soon as the calendar turns to fall, my instinct is to “cozy up” the house. And this includes the chandeliers in the dining room and kitchen. You can start with thin grapevine (available at any craft store) and twine around the chandelier (staying away from any bulbs). Add in faux leaves, berries, acorn stems, or pinecones.
Once your “base” is complete, you can add and subtract for fall holidays. For Halloween, for example, incorporate faux spiderwebs for a spooky effect and dangle miniature bats from the arms. For Thanksgiving, add bundled wheat or miniature ears of colorful dried corn.

For Christmas: Go All Out for Holiday Magic
Chandeliers and Christmas are a match made in heaven. It’s easy to start with a foundation of fresh or faux greenery (keep in mind that real greenery with dry out quickly and will drop needles). You can easily drape pine boughs around the arms of the chandelier, letting them cascade down. Twine greenery up the fixture’s chain to the ceiling. Or simply add sprigs to the candle cups. Ribbons to match your holiday décor complete the look.
For extra sparkle, hang your favorite ornaments, crystal icicles, or snowflakes at varying lengths using metallic thread or ribbon (making sure they are fastened securely). The light reflecting off glass or crystal ornaments truly adds a magical feel to the table.
Easter and Spring: Think Fresh and Airy
Spring is the perfect time to give your chandelier a light, fresh update. Add faux flowering branches in spring faves such as cherry blossom, dogwood, crocus, ivy, or forsythia. (A few sprigs of trailing greenery add a whimsical, garden-inspired touch.) Pastel satin ribbons in shades of pale pink, soft yellow, or mint green bring a burst of color. Nestle miniature nests or tiny faux birds in the chandelier arms.
For Easter, hang delicate glass eggs from the fixture’s arms, in the same way you would hang Christmas ornaments. Or make your own egg creations using paper mâché. (Click here for a DIY Paper Mâché Easter Eggs tutorial.)
Summer: Go Breezy and Relaxed
In summer, less is often more (I personally pare down my house in summer. Less to dust and more time for the beach!). But your chandelier can still reflect an easygoing summer with just a few thoughtful details.
A coastal-inspired look might include hanging delicate starfish, glass floats, or shells from clear fishing line. For a festive Fourth of July, drape red, white, and blue ribbon, or hang small paper stars.
With some imagination, your chandelier can become a dazzling centerpiece that reflects the joy of every season and every holiday!
