I suppose it’s natural that as temps dip, leaves begin to fall, and we spend more time indoors, we all crave a cozy home. Bare wood floors cry out for a rug. Pristine couches beg for squashy toss pillows. And billowy sheer summer curtains need denser drapes to ward against drafts.
Luckily, it’s easy to create a cozy haven and take advantage of one of the season’s hottest interior design trends: layering. According to Elle magazine, “Whether it’s area rugs, table linens, throw blankets, or even matted wall art, layering is in. Old and new are tried-and-true complements, but you can also have fun with patterns, prints, and textures.”
Although I pare back my own house during the summer months, my personal style generally runs towards English Country House. So once autumn arrives, I tend to embrace layering naturally. (For me, the English Country House design aesthetic is really the most timeless of all design “trends.” This style is so forgiving that it can absorb furnishings from multiple eras, charity shop finds, inherited pieces, as well as all of my vast trove of sentimental bric-a-brac. If you’re ready to start layering (and I don’t mean putting on a sweater!) here are 10 simple ways to make your home feel oh-so-cozy this fall.
Add a tablecloth or a runner to the dining room table. This adds color and interest. For even more dimension, pull out some rarely used items from storage to use as a centerpiece (a large console bowl, a cluster of candlesticks, or a grouping of ginger jars)
Toss on a toss pillow… or five. Any couch, loveseat, or armchair becomes more inviting when you add squashy pillows. This is also an easy way to add seasonal color. Combine stripes, plaids, or florals in a coordinated color palette for a cozy, layered feel.
Soft throw blankets amp up the snuggle factor. Toss one over the arm of a chair, the foot of a bed, or the back of a couch. Voila! Instant comfort for chilly nights.
Lean and layer artwork. Who says art should only be hung on the walls? It’s easy to prop framed art or photos on shelves, mantels, and even the floor for a relaxed, collected vibe. (I have a stash of thrifted art to rotate seasonally.)
Layer window treatments. Combine sheers with heavier drapes to soften the light and add visual depth (and actual warmth in the coldest months!).
Group candles in multiples. Use clusters of candles or candlesticks in varying heights. These can be all the same material (all sparkling crystal or warm brass, for example) or try a hodgepodge for a more eclectic look.
Books, books, and more books. Create visual interest with stacks of books on coffee tables, nightstands, bookcases, or shelves. If your books aren’t “pretty,” consider creating book jackets in Canva to coordinate with your color scheme. Unlike simply wrapping books in paper, Canva templates allow you to add book titles to the spine so you can find the title you need easily.
Display personal mementos. When a house is too “done” it lacks warmth and character. Layer in objects that are meaningful to you… from framed photos, to travel souvenirs, to priceless heirlooms (if you’re lucky).
Layer your furniture. Take the adage “every chair should have a table for tea” and go one step further. Use ottomans, footstools, side tables, baskets of magazines, and floor lamps to create inviting, functional layers within a room.
Layer bedding. This is so easy and so effective. Just by adding a contrasting throw at the foot of the bed and one single toss pillow, your space is instantly elevated, creating a luxe and indulgent atmosphere.
