I love fall. Sure, the fiery leaves are gorgeous, and I’ll never turn down a cozy bonfire or a pumpkin spiced latte. But for me, it’s the seasonal change of fashion that has me most excited. Forget New Years, fall has always been the season that feels like a fresh start. And just like swapping out tanks and flip-flops for chunky sweaters and boots, fall is also the perfect time to switch up your hairstyle. Of course, hair is a bit more permanent than just trading a sundress for a wool jacket! So, making a big change takes guts.
If you’re not ready to make a major commitment, small tweaks to an existing cut, or even the addition of one of the season’s top hair accessories, can still made a huge impact. Here are a few of my favorites for fall.
Bangs Are Back (Again!)
Bangs never really go out of style, but this fall they’re showing up in new ways. Curtain bangs continue to be popular (the face-framing look works well with long layers). And, wispy bangs have a breezy, effortless vibe (great if you’re lucky enough to have natural waves).
In the article “3 Short Haircuts Everyone Will Be Trying This September” for ELLE magazine, Hershesons’s Elliot Bute says, “Bangs and softly layered ends are having a moment, adding movement and versatility to update your look for the new season.” And, “sideswept bangs are having a huge moment on the red carpet, as seen on actor Jessica Williams and Halsey. If a middle part is more your speed, try bottleneck bangs or a textured “boho” bangs look for a cool-girl vibe.”
Glamour has a slightly different take, with an ode to Birkin Bangs, repopularized by Daisy Edgar Jones’s Jane–inspired fringe. Celebrity hairstylist Helen Reavey, founder of Act+Acre, explains, “We’re seeing a resurgence of Old Hollywood and vintage-inspired haircuts because there’s a craving for timeless elegance and glamour.” (Yes, please!)
The Bob… Evolved
Bobs are having another major moment this fall, but the beauty is in the variety. There’s literally a bob for everyone! A classic chin-length bob will always be popular for its timeless sophistication. But, a longer “lob” (long bob) can be perfect for those of us (myself included) who want to be able to wear their hair both up and down.
A micro-bob (cropped just below the ears) is also trending with fashion insiders. This oh-so-modern, dramatic look is not for the faint of heart. Slightly tousled, textured bobs are also in demand. In addition to giving off a cool, effortless vibe, this is a great look if your hair doesn’t always “cooperate” when attempting sleeker looks!
But in “The Very Best Haircuts for Women in 2025,” Glamour hails the Italian Bob as the most interesting take on the classic bob for fall. Celebrity hair stylist Rossano Ferretti says, “It’s a chin-length bob cut that typically features minimal layering, resulting in a clean and structured look. With a mix of glamour and nonchalant charm, the haircut is perfect for embracing ‘la dolce vita’ this season.” (What’s not to love?)
Slicked-Back for Effortless Chic
For evenings out or professional settings, the slicked-back look is everywhere this season and was featured prominently on recent couture runways. With roots styled smooth and glossy, the rest of the hair can be worn in a low bun, pony, or simply left cascading on the shoulders.
Want to project confidence? A slicked back hairstyle signals both power and refinement. Slicked back hair also puts the focus firmly on the face, highlighting perfect makeup, unique jewelry, or a striking neckline.
Major bonus? Slicked back hair is THE SOLUTION to bad hair days!
The Power of Hair Accessories
This fall, accessories are just as important as the haircut itself. And they run the gamut from headbands to bows to cute clips.
In recent VOGUE article The Fall 2025 Hair Trends That Will Soon Flood Your FYPs, author Audrey Nobel suggests, “Blair Waldorf–inspired headbands. Coquette bows. The Lelet pony cuff… hair accessories will be a heavy focus for everyone this fall… we are not done seeing thick headbands and exaggerated bows.” A hair accessory is such an easy way to express your personal style and change up your hairstyle without cut or color.
Whether you go for bangs, a fresh bob, or slicked-back sophistication, fall 2025’s hairstyles are all about combining classic cuts with modern flair. Now, where did I leave that hairbrush???
