You just can’t beat a classic. The workhorses of every woman’s wardrobe, from the LBD, to a quilted Chanel bag, to a well-cut pair of gray wool trousers, all will last for years and never look dated. In a tight economy, designers are falling back on these basics, giving them bit of a twist and creating fashion that is fresh, but won’t look passé in just a few months. One of my personal favorites? Classic loafers.
A fan for many years, I already have half a dozen pairs in various materials, shades, and price points. And, I wear them with just about everything! Shorts and canvas loafers? Check. Straight leg jeans and sassy red leather versions? You bet. I’ve even been known to sport a sleek, dressy pair with a long skirt when I know I’ll be on my feet all day sightseeing!
Part of the attraction (for me, anyway), is the comfort factor. I feel a bit more chic when I am not hobbling due to pain in my arches or blisters on the balls of my feet! (I sincerely have not yet recovered from New York Fashion Week 2010.) The other part of the loafer’s ongoing appeal is definitely ease. With a hectic lifestyle, the slip-on-and-go factor is so appealing!
And I’m not alone. The fashion experts at Marie Claire magazine recently highlighted the top loafer trends for Fall 2025. According to Marie Clair, “Suede trends every fall, but this year, everyone is obsessed with suede loafers in particular. It’s easy to see why. The forgiving fabric is less blister-prone than traditional leather and wears better over time to perfectly fit your foot.”
Or maybe you can try an embossed croc print. Subtle and sophisticated, croc also has a retro vibe that adds some personality to an otherwise bland outfit.
And don’t forget grandpa-inspired tassel loafers! Although I personally lean towards penny loafers, the tassel is a charming, preppy option.
Another spin is the “loafer mule” which has the flexibility of a sandal without having to expose your toes to the city streets. (can also be worn with socks)
And finally, platforms are back in a big way. A natural extension of the lug sole from 2023 and 2024, these loafers sometimes reach for serious new heights! (see how trendsetter Bella Hadid styles hers)
However, if you can only choose one pair this season, make it black. Less of a “trend” and more of an actual investment, basic black loafers are everywhere right now.
My favorite for style, comfort, and price is the classic G.H. Bass Whitney Loafer. These are available in multiple shades, but simple black is a truly a standout.
