Chicago Fashion Designers: Do Good, Look Great

Chicago Fashion Designers: Doing Good is Always in Vogue. Here are just a few of the stunning scarves featured at last year's Heshima Kenya Fashion Challenge.Chicago fashion designers will compete in the second annual Heshima Kenya Fashion Challenge benefiting unaccompanied refugee girls and women living in Nairobi, Kenya. The Project Runway inspired competition will feature fashion designers Anna Hovet, Audra Kaske, Julius LaCour, Agga B, and Taneasha Prunty from Gidi, each of whom will incorporate in their designs scarves made by Heshima Kenya’s Maisha Collective. A panel of celebrity judges, including acclaimed Chicago designer Maria Pinto, the fashion designer who helped place Michelle Obama on Vanity Fair’s best-dressed list, will judge designs.

The Heshima Kenya Fashion Challenge will be held from 6 to 10 PM on October 24 at the Bridgeport Art Center, 1200 West 35th Street, and will celebrate the work of the Heshima Kenya’s Maisha Collective, an income generating project for refugee girls. The Fashion Challenge will kick off with a signature cocktail, The Maisha Martini, and hors d’oeuvres provided by Food for Thought. Fun prizes to pamper, renew and style will be announced throughout the evening, provided by Akira and others. K. Amato Designs will accessorize runway looks and guests will be able to purchase Maisha Collective scarves and bid on designs featured in the Fashion Challenge runway show.

Heshima Kenya is a 501(c)(3) non-profit headquartered in Chicago and delivers programs and services for refugee girls in Nairobi, Kenya. Heshima Kenya offers programs and services in Nairobi and the Chicago office manages organizational communications, fundraising efforts and oversees international sales of the Maisha Collective scarf line.

The Maisha Collective is Heshima Kenya’s income generating program where members produce and manage a line of hand-dyed scarves. 100% of Maisha sales support their journey to financial literacy and independence.
