8 Ways a Summer Scarf Instantly Updates Your Look

Effortless Summer Style? A Summer Scarf Instantly Update a Look!According to personal stylist Monica Barnett of Blueprint for Style, “As a 17-year veteran wardrobe strategist and personal branding expert, I’ve always found that the ‘devil is in the details,’ thus, accessories always matter!” And for summer style that’s breezy, fun, and effortless, Monica says that there’s no accessory which hits the mark quite like a summer scarf.

Lightweight scarves, whether silk, cotton, or gauze, are one of the most versatile pieces you can add to your warm-weather wardrobe. Not only are they practical (hello, sun protection and hair control!), but they also pack a big style punch… all with minimal effort. Best of all, scarves are an affordable way to refresh existing summer staples without buying a whole new wardrobe.

Here are some of the most stylish and creative ways to use scarves and elevate your summer look:

Use a Summer Scarf as a Belt

Swap out a standard belt for a colorful scarf to instantly add personality to jeans, shorts, or a sweet sundress. Simply thread it through loops and tie in a knot (or a bow if it’s long enough) for a playful, feminine vibe. Used as a belt, a scarf adds texture, color, and a touch of unexpected flair (plus, it’s a lot more comfortable in the summer heat than a stiff leather belt).

In Your Hair: Head Scarves and Ponytail Wraps

A scarf in your hair is both stylish and functional. Use it as a headband to keep hair off your face while adding a retro or boho-chic vibe to your outfit. Try tying a scarf around a ponytail for a pretty, romantic touch (perfect for vacationing). Or braid one into your hair for an even more intricate look. Whether you’re heading to the beach or brunch, a summer scarf is a stylish way to tame humidity-frizzed hair.

Tied to a Handbag

One of my personal trademarks is this simple trick, which takes less than 30 seconds, but makes a big impact. Tie a scarf around the handle of your favorite summer tote or crossbody bag. Whether it’s knotted, braided, or simply looped through, a pretty scarf adds color and coordinates with different outfits. It’s also a great way to personalize last year’s go-to bag without spending a dime.

Try a Scarf as a Top or Beach Cover-Up

For the bold fashion lover, a larger scarf or square can double as a halter top, bandeau, or beach cover-up. It’s a fantastic option for vacation dressing, since one scarf can be styled multiple ways without taking up valuable space in your suitcase. Look for lightweight fabrics (but not see-through) and vibrant prints that channel the mood of summer.

Wrap One Around a Hat

Another one of my faves, it’s easy to give your straw hat a quick refresh by wrapping a scarf around the crown. This instantly updates your look and adds a custom feel when matching (or contrasting) with your outfit.

As a Statement Necklace or Bracelet

It’s easy to turn a long summer scarf into an alternative to a necklace by knotting or twisting it into a rope. Weave one through a chunky chain necklace. Or, simply tie a square at the throat or wrist.

Designer Dagmar Spichale agrees, “I’ve lately found myself wearing scarves instead of a necklace and I am still loving them, even though I wouldn’t call myself a scarf person. Here is why: It’s a fantastic way to make a simple jeans and T-shirt/ button-down/ sweater outfit a lot more special, and while the concept of a scarf is not new it somehow looks fresher right now than jewelry. The pop of color that a scarf provides just adds a little something! I’m especially drawn to scarves modeled after classic men’s styles—long and narrow. My initial inspiration came from the scarf Luc wears in an episode of Emily in Paris.”

Try One Around the Waist as a Sarong

At the beach or poolside, a larger scarf makes a perfect sarong or swim cover-up. Just wrap it around your waist and knot it on the side. It’s light, flattering, and easy to toss in your beach bag. (Bonus: it takes up way less space than traditional cover-ups.)

Wear a Summer Scarf as a Wrap for Breezy Evenings

When the sun sets and the evening breeze rolls in, a light scarf can work as a perfect shawl or wrap. Drape it over your shoulders with a sleeveless dress or tank to stay warm. Très chic!

Whether your style is polished, playful, or beachy, there’s a scarf style to suit your summer mood. The best part? You probably already have a few tucked away in your drawer!
