Do you remember making greeting cards back in elementary school? I sure do — my mom kept them for decades. And I’ve also saved every single handmade card my children have given me over the years, too. Tucked away in my memory box, these crayon, sticker, and felt creations are among my most treasured keepsakes. But card-making isn’t just for kids. For anyone who loves crafting, holidays and celebrations from Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, to graduations, birthdays, and more, are the perfect opportunity to create something heartfelt, beautiful, and totally unique. It’s a creative way to show your love and make someone’s day extra special.
Ready to make a card they’ll never forget? Here’s how to get started!
Choosing Your Style
Handmade greeting cards come in countless styles. Whether your taste leans toward vintage and romantic, modern and minimalist, bright and whimsical, or somewhere in between, your card can reflect your personality (as well as suit the recipient perfectly!).
For a modern look, think clean lines, geometric shapes, and neutral tones or bold color-blocking. Use washi tape, metallic markers, or sleek stencils to add your favorite designs.
For kitchy cards, go all in with pastel colors, fun patterns, cartoon characters, googly eyes, or playful illustrations. Stickers and die-cut shapes are a great place to start.
Of course, vintage-inspired cards are always a hit for their nostalgic feel. Use floral or lace patterns, tea-stained paper, and antique-style imagery to evoke the charm of a bygone era.
Better yet, don’t be afraid to mix and match styles!
Gathering Imagery and Design Elements
Once you’ve chosen a style, gather your imagery and materials. Depending on your theme, you can find images and patterns in printable kits, online archives, old books, magazines, wrapping paper, or even fabric and wallpaper scraps. (Pinterest is the best inspiration for combining colors, patterns, and images.)
Layer your chosen visuals with coordinating background paper, textured cardstock, or fabric swatches for depth and interest.
And, no matter your preferred style, embellishments elevate cards from simple to stunning. Add dimension and personality with:
- Pom-pom, crochet, ribbon, baker’s twine, jute, or lace trim
- Pressed or faux flowers
- Buttons, beads, sequins, and flat-backed rhinestones
- Scrapbooking 3-D embellishments (available at your local craft store)
- Die-cut shapes (There are many die-cut punches available inexpensively on Amazon. One that I purchased recently is a set of three different sized circles which is oh-so-useful!)
For minimalist cards, you may want to consider just one striking embellishment, like a gold foil border or a tiny design in one corner. For whimsical or eclectic cards, go ahead and layer elements boldly with joyful colors and interesting textures. (For me, more is more!)
What’s Your Message?
Of course, what makes a handmade card truly meaningful is the message (those “You’re the Best Mommy in the Whole Wide World” cards in little kid handwriting still choke me up.). Whether your message is heartfelt, humorous, or poetic, your unique voice is what matters. (Immortalize an inside joke or a shared memory for an extra special touch!)
Try experimenting with different fonts and writing styles. You don’t need to be a calligraphy expert — a simple cursive or neat block lettering works just fine. If you are not happy with your handwriting (mine has become abysmal as I’ve gotten older) you can also use stencils, stamps, or just print out your message to paste it inside.
Handmade Cards Are Keepsakes to Treasure
The little details make your handmade card feel like a true gift. Try these thoughtful finishing touches:
- Line your envelope with patterned paper (I like patterned scrapbook paper because it’s bendable).
- Seal the envelope with a wax stamp (or a personalized sticker.)
- Add a confetti sprinkle or a spritz of perfume (In college I once added a dash of sand to my sorority sister cards during summer break — LOL, I do not recommend sand unless it’s in a transparent envelope!).
- Tuck in a photo or bookmark as an extra sweet surprise.
Crafting handmade greeting cards is more than just a fun project. It’s a way to truly brighten someone’s day in a tangible, lasting way. Whether your style is elegant and understated or colorful and fun, your card will carry a little piece of your heart with it.
