Growing up, my mom always used to say, “pretty is as pretty does.” And, it’s true… in part. But, being happy and satisfied with your own appearance does help with mental health and overall happiness. (Check out this article at NeuroLaunch to learn more.) So, if you are wondering what you might be able to do in order to better appreciate your own appearance, there’s actually quite a lot!
Stop Comparing
Comparison is the thief of joy. So, stop comparing yourself to others! This is perhaps the single most important thing you can do in order to be happier with your appearance. Comparing yourself to other people less often helps you naturally feel better about yourself. So, it’s a simple, but powerful thing to be aware of. Limit scrolling. Stop thinking about which of your friends or acquaintances are “more attractive.” And, remember, Instagram and other social media platforms are loaded with filters, fillers, and outright fakes.
Make Small Changes for Yourself
A really powerful way to be happier with how you look is simply to make some small changes just for yourself. It could be as simple as getting a dimple piercing or a tiny butterfly tattoo. Change the way you style your hair (or be bold with a new cut). Take a chance with color in your wardrobe if you tend to favor neutrals. Or, simply spend some time on self-care with a moisturizing soak in the tub, hair mask, and facial peel. Whatever you choose, this is not about making yourself beautiful for anyone else. It’s time to celebrate yourself.
Focus on What You Do Like About Yourself
There may always be elements to your appearance that you are less happy with, but everyone has features that they do like. Unfortunately, in your self-criticism (and comparison to outrageously Photoshopped celebrities online), these may fade into the back of your mind. Focusing on the positives will help you to be happier with your appearance. Got well-toned legs? Highlight them this spring with a shorter skirt. Pretty lips? Go for broke with a bright new lipstick. Elegant hands? Invest in a manicure. Whatever you do like, focus on that feature.
Treat Your Body with Respect
Treat your body with the respect it deserves, because you only get one! By properly taking care of yourself, you receive a double benefit – you’ll not only look better, but you’ll feel better, too. Skipping greasy fast food and eating more whole vegetables will help clear up skin. Getting the proper amount of sleep will eliminate eye bags and dark circles. Daily walking will help you drop any added weight. And staying hydrated will improve your overall health, putting a bounce in your step… and isn’t that confidence what beauty is all about? The way you treat your body will not only make a difference to how it looks, but also to how you feel about it!
