Why go out when you can stay in? Spring is the perfect time to reimagine your outdoor entertaining space and make it as beautiful and functional as possible – all while still staying in budget! With costs rising every day, your garden provides an entertaining area for hosting bonfires and barbecues, tea parties and game nights, boce matches, crab feasts, and corn boils. Here are our top outdoor entertaining space updates to get you started!
First, Create a Defined Space
The first step to designing an outdoor entertaining area is to establish a dedicated space. Depending on your home, this might be a patio, pergola, or deck. A patio (made of concrete, stone, slate, or pavers) is a durable, level foundation for an outdoor dining or lounging space. Concrete is pricey to have installed, but if you have experience, it can be done for just a few dollars per square foot. Pavers, slates, and bricks are somewhat easier to lay (if you are patient) and materials can sometimes even be had free on Buy Nothing groups. (One of my favorite looks is a collage of mixed materials, for an eclectic look.)
If you prefer something with a bit more structure and shade, a pergola is a fantastic option. Pre-fab pergolas are also budget friendly. (For example, I’ve had this 10’ x 10’ metal structure from Amazon for years and it was UNDER $350.) These are easy to install and can be erected on grass, pavers, brick, or wood decking. A pergola also offers a great “sense of place,” providing both architectural interest and a framework for flowering vines, festive bunting, or twinkling strings of lights.
For anyone who already has a deck, spring is the perfect time to refresh it with a good power wash or scrub. A new coat of stain will not only enhance its appeal, but will also keep the wood from deteriorating, protecting your investment.
Plan for Outdoor Activities
An outdoor entertaining space should be as fun as it is stylish. So, incorporate features that encourage conversation or activity.
One of my personal faves is a firepit or outdoor fireplace. If your town allows it, a fire feature is so lovely on chilly evenings and a cozy spot for roasting marshmallows! A barbecue (or full outdoor kitchen if it’s in your budget) ensures that cooking is part of the entertaining experience, not a chore. Cooking outdoors keeps you, as the host, engaged with guests while preparing a wonderful meal.
Finally, if you have a larger yard, think about adding fun activities like bocce ball, badminton, or even croquet. A “drinks and cornhole” party, for example, would make a fun (and cost-effective) alternative to an evening out.
While planning for entertaining is essential, it’s important that you don’t forget to create areas designed just for relaxation, too. Comfy loungers, a lazy hammock strung between two trees, or even a porch swing/glider can transform your backyard into a personal oasis. Fluffy pillows and snuggly throws make outdoor furnishings even more cozy.
Essentials for a Seamless Outdoor Dining Experience
Outdoor dining should be both comfortable and convenient. A good-quality table and comfortable chairs invite guests to linger over meals (how many times have you squirmed in a chair that did not appear to be designed to actually sit in?).
If you have space, an outdoor fridge and kitchen area can be a game-changer, eliminating the need for constant trips inside. If a full kitchen isn’t an option, a small bar cart stocked with drinks, glasses, napkins, and other essentials can also help make dining outdoors easier.
And, don’t forget some shade! Whether you choose an outdoor umbrella, a vine covered pergola, or a retractable awning, having at least a patch of shade is a must-have.
Light Up the Night
Good lighting extends the usability of your outdoor space late into the night. Solar-powered lights lining pathways, hanging lanterns, or battery-operated candles on tables create a warm and inviting ambiance.
I especially love string lights draped across a patio or wrapped around trees. This adds a touch of magic! And, motion-activated lights are a great safety addition. (I have these hanging wall lights on my side path)
Infuse Your Personality into Your Outdoor Space
Finally, make your outdoor area uniquely yours by incorporating colors, patterns, and decor that reflect your style. Whether you prefer a minimalist aesthetic, cottagecore charm, or a cozy boho vibe, there are many inexpensive ways to personalize your outdoor. Throw pillows, outdoor rugs, and table settings in vibrant hues add a pop of color. Whimsical container gardens add life. Or consider hanging art pieces, wind chimes, and unique birdhouses.
