If you love thrifting and DIY projects, you already know the magic that can be found in an old picture frame. Whether it’s ornate, rustic, or sleek and simple, second-hand frames can quickly be transformed into a wide variety of functional pieces for your home. Here are some of our favorite creative ways to repurpose thrift store frames.
Create a Layered Border with Two (or More!) Frames
Make a striking art piece by layering a small frame inside a larger one. This technique adds dimension and depth to your wall decor.
Just find two frames that complement each other in size, materials, and style. (If color is an issue, you can also paint them to match your room.) You can secure the smaller frame inside the larger one using glue or brackets, or simple hang within the negative space. This layered effect is a great way to showcase a favorite piece of artwork.
Make an Earring Organizer with Wire Mesh Backing
Lacking in horizontal storage? Ditch the jewelry box! Instead, create a stylish earring display with a thrifted frame.
Simply remove the glass and backing from the frame. Cut a piece of wire mesh to fit inside (easily found at most hardware stores or big box retailers like Home Depot). Staple the mesh to the flat back of the frame. Then, hang the frame on a wall or prop it up on your dresser to display your earrings neatly.]
Frame a (Previous) Eyesore
Remember Monica Geller’s famous peephole frame from Friends?Sometimes, the most unique wall art isn’t a traditional print, painting or photo!
Recreate this look and frame your thermostat, a key holder, or even a light switch. Find a small frame (adorn as you see fit), remove the glass and backing and attach to the wall. It’s unexpected, unique and a lot of fun!
Repurpose Thrift Store Frames to Showcase Sentimental Objects
Do you have a drawer full of love letters? A scrap of your grandmother’s wedding dress? A childhood postcard collection? A beautiful frame elevates sentimental keepsakes, turning them into cherished displays.
Frames in all sizes are available at thrift stores. So, even a large collection can be accommodated. (For sentimental bits, I personally love an ornate gilt frame.)
Depending on the material, you may want to mount your keepsake on acid-free backing. And again, depending on the material, hang out of direct sunlight which will degrade the items over time.
Craft a DIY Memo and Note Board
It’s easy to turn an old frame into a memo board! This is a perfect way to keep track of important notes, lists, receipts, and photos.
Just remove the glass and backing from the frame. Replace with corkboard (cut to size) or a magnetic sheet. (You can cover the cork or metal with fabric or peel and stick wallpaper for a bit of color and style.) I love this idea to add a bit of oomph to a bland office space.
Create a “Wreath” for any Season
A thrifted frame can offer a unique twist on a tradition wreath. You’ll need a sturdy frame and whatever seasonal elements you choose for decorating. After removing the glass and backing, attach flowers, greenery, flowers, bird nests, etc. around the frame using floral wire or hot glue. Add a ribbon for hanging. Especially if you are hanging the wreath on the front door, don’t forget to add felt backing to prevent scratches.
DIY Personalized Christmas Ornaments
Small thrifted frames make beautiful, one-of-a-kind Christmas ornaments. While I lean towards ornate gilt frames, there are so many choices. And, because these are small, they are usually less than $2!
You can paint or decorate them to match your holiday theme. Insert festive images, family photos, or even handwritten holiday messages. (For years, I have been thrifting small and framing vintage equestrian prints for a horse themed tree in my daughter’s room.)
Use extra scrapbook paper or other decorate paper to finish off the back, and attach an eye hook and a ribbon to the top for hanging.
These also make thoughtful, personalized gifts for family and friends.
Repurpose Thrift Store Frames to Make a Kids’ Art Gallery
If you have budding artists at home, this project provides a lovely way to showcase their latest masterpieces. For this project, I like a very “grand” frame. You can even create an entire gallery. (After all, he or she may be the next Picasso!)
Rotate weekly, or whenever the mood strikes.
