Preparing the Guestroom for Christmas

Preparing the Guestroom for ChristmasIf you are hosting out of town guests this holiday season, the time for a reevaluation of your guest space is right now. It goes without saying that you will clean the room from top to bottom and make space in the closet and dresser, but what about those thoughtful touches that guests are sure to appreciate? Here are our top tips for preparing the guestroom for Christmas:

Bedding Options

In addition to a freshly washed set of sheets and standard blanket and duvet, consider adding a quilt or extra blanket. My own guest room is located at the front of the house and is often quite chilly. So, I have a weighted blanket available on a side chair as well, to make sure guests stay toasty! (If you are looking for one of the best, check out this chunky knit weighted blanket from Uttermara.)

Room Darkening Drapes or Shades

My guest room is quite bright, which is lovely in the daytime… not so great at dawn. So, investing in thermal, room darkening drapes was essential. Inexpensive shades can also be installed without breaking the budget.

A Variety of Pillows

Occasionally, I have had guests bring their own pillows. But, providing a nice variety will make for a cozy sleep. Some fluffy pillows, a few flatter ones, and at least one down, or down alternative should offer enough choices that guests will get a good night’s rest. (My new fave is the Legends Luxury Royal Down Pillow.)

A Fan (Even in Winter)

Two of my three adult children can’t sleep without a fan! So, keeping a fan in the closet (and letting guests know that it’s available) can be a lifesaver to anyone who depends on “the hum” to sleep.

A Bench

Perfect for unpacking a suitcase or sitting to pull on winter boots, a bench at the end of the bed is a must for any guest room. If space is tight, consider a storage bench, which can be used to stow away extra bedding and provide seating.

Let There be Light

Warm overhead lighting and bedside lighting are important, naturally. However, if your room features a desk or chair, don’t forget the task lighting. Another thoughtful addition is a clip-on book light out on the nightstand, for night owls.

Tumble-up or Carafe

Keep by the bedside a refresh daily with lemon or fruit infused water. Thirsty guests will thank you!

Snacks for the Peckish

Ever wake up in the middle of the night hungry? Even after holiday feasting, I admit, I have! A small basket of snacks (both sweet and salty) offers a simply solution so guests won’t feel they need to ramble through the house to raid the fridge at 3 am.

A Selection of Books and Magazines

Whilst everyone can certainly read the news and catch up on social media on their phones, I personally enjoy a late night cozy in bed with a proper book or magazine! There’s something about being propped up by pillow in bed and physically holding a book or magazine, turning the pages, that feels exceptionally snug.

Mirror, Mirror… Mirror

Not only is a traditional dresser mirror an absolute must, consider a full-length mirror (a cheval style is elegant, however, back-of-the-door works too), and a makeup mirror.

Essential Toiletries in the Bath

Ever arrive to your destination without some crucial beauty item? I am guilty of that faux pas, as well. Add a small basket including new toothbrushes, toothpaste, lotion, disposable razors, and other essentials in plain sight on the bath vanity, so guests need not even have to ask.

Sumptuous Towels

I recently upgraded to some luxe bath towels by Tommy Hilfiger. It was long overdue! And, not only are these towels beautiful, fluffy, and absorbent, they come in a rainbow of pretty hues from Sunshine, to Raspberry Rose, to Seaglass.

A Christmas Tree (Yes, Really!)

Every year during the holidays, I set up a small tabletop tree in the guest room and design it around my specific guests (this year the theme is white and gold, with lots of crystal icicles and chandelier crystals). This has become such a talked about tradition amongst our family and friends that my daughter’s boyfriend’s family in Spain has actually adopted it, too!

No room for a tree? No problem! Add a festive wreath, some everygreen swags, or twinkle lights to create a festive atmophere your guests will remember.
