A Classic London Fog Trenchcoat Always Looks Right

A Classic London Fog Trenchcoat Always Looks RightLast year when I went to Paris, I faced a conundrum. The weather was forecast to be chilly for the week, but not downright cold. My solution? A classic London Fog trenchcoat!

According to Wikipedia, “The trenchcoat was developed as an alternative to the heavy serge greatcoats   worn by British and French soldiers in the First World War… the design was dubbed “trench coat” by the soldiers in the front line.” However, it was actually Audrey Hepburn as the iconic Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s who immortalized the trench for women. Skyrocketing sales ensued, and the trench because a classic for women, almost overnight.

Although the trenchcoat is never (ever!) officially “out,” it does wax and wane in popularity. However, if this fall’s celebrity sightings are any indication, the trench is very much a “hot pick” this season. For example, Brooke Shields arrived at the Tommy Hilfiger Spring 2025 runway show wearing a very classic trenchcoat (paired with short skirt and boots – yes!). Angelina Jolie sported a similar look just a few weeks earlier. And recently Princess Catherine gave the style her royal stamp of approval in full length Marlborough Trench Coat by Holland Cooper.

One of my personal favorites for the season is the belted plaid trench from Ralph Lauren (see it here). But, if you prefer a classic that will stand the test of time for years to come, consider the single breasted London Fog trenchcoat, pictured. This is the coat that took me from the Arc de Triomphe to the Palace of Versailles, the Eiffel Tower to the Louvre, plus a mind-boggling array of cafes, bistros, and shops.

The coat features a timeless button-front design and belted waist, with contrasting buttons and snazzy epaulettes. And an American in Paris, it was simple and chic enough to blend in with oh-so-fashionable French women. (To go incognito, I simply paired it with a silk scarf in my low ponytail and oversized sunglasses.)

A great medium length, this coat is truly flattering for any height and looks equally sophisticated worn over jeans and boots, or a skirt and heels for the office.

It’s also incredibly practical. Crafted from a blend of 57% cotton and 43% polyester, the water-resistant fabric makes it perfect for rainy days, or just those days when the temps begin to dip. It also travels well! Jammed into my suitcase for the beginning of my trip (a few days in sunny southern Spain, no coat required), any wrinkles or creases shook right out when I arrived in a gray, overcast Paris. Since it’s machine washable, this coat is easy to maintain, as well.
