Last Minute Boo Basket Ideas

Boo basket ideasThe Boo Basket trend shows no signs of abating. Unfamiliar with the concept? Introduced via Tik Tok about two years ago, this gift giving trend celebrates the season with a small (or large!) fall-themed gift “basket.”

Gifts can be given to children, besties, or a romantic partner. Although it has drawn some criticism (Another gift giving opportunity? How commercial!), as a lover of all things fall and a lifelong “sweater-weather” girl, I personally think it’s a cute tradition to usher in the fab fall season.

Looking for boo basket ideas? The contents really depend on the recipient:

Kids’ boo baskets

You may want to stay away from candy, since trick or treating is just around the corner. For the youngest, some coloring books, paint by numbers, or a small craft-y project are always appreciated. Funny, fall-themed socks are available very inexpensively, as are autumn headbands or hair ties. Some favorite snacks (pita chips, veggie sticks) in individual bags can be parceled out slowly in lunch boxes. A book (or books) by a favorite author is one of my go-gifts, no matter the holiday. And, “experience coupons” (a trip to the batting cages, a get-out-of-your-daily-chores-free card) can be tailored to each child.

Seasonal coffees (I love Autumn Blend from Compass Coffee) or teas, along with accoutrements such as a mug or teacup, tea ball, or flavored stirrers is always appreciated. A book (you’ll sense a theme here), journal, or pretty notebook is another go-to. Something personal, such as a silk scarf or brooch is a lovely, wearable reminder of your friendship. And, as I get older, I find that I love to give something truly from the heart – a jam pot that was my mother’s favorite to a friend who makes jam, or a piece of my Grandmother’s prized pink Depression glass to an old college roommate who collects it, for example.

Gifts for your boo

Small tokens of appreciation are the goal. Those over-the-top gifts can wait. Think along the lines of a new board or card game if you do game nights together. Try tickets to a local comedy show, art exhibit, or concert. Little treats, especially any hard-to-find or imported items (a favorite wine, special olives or spreads) that he or she would not normally splurge on. Team jerseys and tees are easy to find (and you can never have too many!). Books (again, I know) or a magazine subscription (just roll up the first issue and tie with a ribbon). And, at least one “inside joke” item – this is your boo, after all!

Boo basket ideasFor any basket, handmade items are an essential addition and an oh-so-personal touch. Whatever your creative passion (knitting, baking, etc.) include an item (or two!).

The “basket” itself need not be so literal. Plastic jack-o-lanterns, canvas tote bags, metal tins, a pretty storage box or tray can all be part of the gift itself. Decorate with ribbon, tissue, faux fall greenery, etc. if you choose.

And of course, now that boo baskets are here, don’t forget to hit the after-the-holidays clearance sales to pick up and store fun items for next year… at deep discounts!
