It would be funny, if it weren’t so predictable, how my fashion sense takes an abrupt left turn every time the seasons change. In February, all I can think about are citrus hues, white sandals, and wicker handbags. But once the first hint of fall arrives, I find myself longing to drown in a sea of caramel cashmere, chocolate brown leather, and plaid, plaid, plaid!
Yesterday, the November issue of Vogue arrived, and once again, I was relieved to see that my fondness for plaid (dare I call it an obsession?) is still shared by fashion’s foremost authorities. Stunning overcoats from Altuzarra, cheeky plaid trousers from The Row, a fun-loving dress from Thom Browne? This issue was packed with plaids – large and small, colorful and subtle, bold and conservative.
This is great news for me, as my closet is (and always has been, if I am honest) a treasure trove of plaids of all sorts. There’s the voluminous Stewart plaid wrap that makes an appearance only at Christmas, the lovely Ness bag my friend brought back when visiting her daughter at the University of St. Andrews, and a pair of red, black and gray plaid pointy toed flats that must be 15 years old … which I simply can’t bear to give up.
Are you ready to add plaid to your fall lineup? Below are a few of my favorite finds for the season.
Toss on a Plaid Scarf
With winter just around the corner, a scarf in a cheery red plaid will add a burst of happiness to dreary, gray days. And, no one does plaid better than Ralph Lauren! Although technically this recycled Tartan wool scarf is from the men’s section, I believe that the charming colorway is unisex.
Measuring 72 x 12 inches, it’s generous enough for a variety of different looks (click here to see (9 Ways to Wear a Winter Scarf). Note: This scarf is wool, so it’s a dry clean only item. Amazon $119.95
Handbags from Scotland
Next on my personal wish-list, is a large plaid tote bag from Celtic Ranch. Roomy enough to carry all of your essentials, this bag is made of famous Harris Tweed® wool handwoven in Scotland and genuine leather.
This bag comes in multiple colorways for a look that is uniquely your own. Celtic Ranch $89.99 (Free U.S. shipping on $100+ orders).
A Plaid Trench is a Classic
Also from Ralph Lauren, this classic women’s maxi trench coat in plaid wool makes me dream of walking the Scottish Highlands or exploring castle ruins on a brisk November day!
The belted coat is standard length, with a straight fit, and oversized notched lapels. This piece is made from 50% wool, 45% polyester, and 5% other materials, so once again, it is a dry clean only item. Amazon $359.95
