Fall is a bit of a nostalgic time for me. My daughter was a competitive rower for many years, so for me, crisp autumn mornings mean sitting by the riverside, cheering her team throughout an exciting regatta. On the East Coast, those 7 am start times can be chilly (and occasionally downright frigid!). My coping strategies included vast amounts of coffee and a snuggly Ralph Lauren “Caldwell” throw. Not only did it keep me toasty, that 100% wool blanket also looked great! Imported from Scotland, it was a classic red and green plaid, with traditional fringe trim and an embroidered crest.
My throw is several years old now and more than a little bit worn. Sadly, it’s no longer available to purchase, so I can’t get an exact replacement. But this season’s new offerings are every bit as lovely. And it’s a good thing, because these days, instead of sitting by the riverside, I am spending my Saturdays at the stables, cheering at horse shows! And, because the competitions run rain or shine, and well into the winter months, I have been looking for a new plaid throw (or maybe two?).
One of my favorite finds is the Highland Plaid Throw, also from Ralph Lauren. A generous 72″ x 54″ the Highland throw features a vibrant plaid pattern with whip stitched edges, a brushed finish and a monogram embroidered at the corner. It is incredibly soft, as it is crafted from Better Cotton™. Best of all, it’s machine washable. So, if you are allergic to dry cleaning chemicals, or simply would rather be able to wash your throw at home, this is an excellent choice. Macys Retail: $67.99
Another fall fave is the Pendelton Motor Robe Wool Throw Blanket (with genius carrying straps). Woven from soft, warm wool, in muted browns, beiges and blues, this fringed throw measures 52″ x 66″. It was inspired by early-19th century blankets that were a warm, welcome companion when traveling by horse-drawn carriage, train or boat. Shown in the Raleigh plaid, this throw is also available in a Vintage Dress Stuart and even a Rob Roy plaid (aka red and black buffalo check). Nordstrom Retail: $99.50
Finally, LL Bean offers a washable wool throw! The 54″ x 60″ fringed blanket is available in a variety of beautiful plaids. Shown is the Smith, which is a well-known and well-loved color combination of indigo and green shot with bold red and yellow. But you can also find this cozy Pendelton wool throw in a farmhouse-inspired Cream/Indigo Heather Buffalo Check, Dress Stewart, or Medium Gray plaid. Made in the USA. LL Bean Retail: $129.00.
With winter fast approaching and temps dipping daily, I do tend to wonder, why can’t anyone in this family get involved in an indoor sport? Basketball, volleyball… ping pong?!
