I’ve read that by the time she turns thirty, every woman should have a few classic pieces in her wardrobe that can see her through any social situation. What is Moissanite?
If you’ve never heard of moissanite, this is a fine gem that is guaranteed to hold its color and clarity forever. Moissanite was discovered in a meteorite crater by French scientist and Nobel Prize Winner Henri Moissan in 1893. At first, he believed he had discovered diamonds, but later determined that the crystals were composed instead of silicon carbide.
Moissan actually spent the rest of his life trying to re-create his initial discovery. And eventually, scientists managed to perfect the process, creating silicon carbide crystals (moissanite) that are more durable than sapphires, rubies, emeralds or even diamonds. This means that the stones are suitable for everyday wear, unlike some of my favorite beautiful-but-brittle gemstones, such as emeralds which are prone to scratches, or opals which tend to crack, chip and break with alarming regularity. In fact, on the Mohs scale, moissanite is one of the hardest substances on Earth.
In addition to its durability, moissanite is incredibly brilliant. In fact, its dispersion is even greater than your average diamond. Moissanite also scores slightly higher than diamonds on the refractive index.
Technical lingo aside, this means that moissanite stones actually sparkle more than diamonds.
