How to Decorate Using Cake Stands and Tiered Trays

How to decorate using cake stands and tiered traysIf you’ve watched an episode or two of Fixer Upper, Good Bones, or the Property Brothers, you know that cake stands are an incredibly popular way to update almost any interior space. And, cake stands can complement all styles from farmhouse, to traditional, to contemporary.

Do you have a cake stand languishing in a china closet or cupboard? There are endless ways to give classic cake stands new uses as décor. Some of my favorites include:

Highlighting a collection of mismatched candlesticks. Use pillars, tapers, or votives (or a mix of all three). I especially love a selection of crystal candlesticks in varying heights, using just one color candle. Add some greenery to complement the season and you have a stunning display.

Corralling bits and pieces on a desk, from paperclips to pencils. Small containers gathered together (glass votive holders work well for small items) with one standout decorative element and… voila! You have instant style and a clutter-free work space.

Elevating humble items. Use a cake stand at the kitchen sink to contain dish soap, sponge and scrubbie. Try one on the bathroom shelf to consolidate soaps, rolled washcloths, and a scented candle. Add one to a dresser to gather beautiful perfume and cologne bottles.

No cake stands or tiered trays lurking in the cabinet? These make easy DIY projects. Simply take a plate or tray and glue an inexpensive glass or crystal candlestick to the bottom. (Always use glass glue or Super Glue, as Elmers or school glue will dissolve in the dishwasher.)

Don’t like crystal? Let your imagination run wild! You can create cake and tiered trays stands out of almost anything. A vintage pie tin and an overturned tiny tin pail make a charming, rustic display space. Try a glass or wineglass (added benefit: you can stash pretty items or greenery inside the glass turning it into mini-cloche!).

These are fantastic decorating ideas, and a fun way to use these trays. I’ve been looking on Pinterest for ideas on how to get some height for decor on a shelf top or tabletop, way to go!
