Thanksgiving is one holiday that I look forward to all year long. The premise, to give thanks for all the many blessings that I’ve received during the year (and the absence of any stressful gift giving), makes it such a relaxed, happy time to gather with my friends and family. Last Thanksgiving, we had a charming set up outdoors and were fortunate that the weather cooperated (a real feat on the East Coast in late November). But in order not to tempt Fate twice, this year we are headed back in indoors. And I plan to go all out on the food and the Thanksgiving table setting.
My house has been decorated for fall since September (see Fall Décor Takes You From September To Thanksgiving here). So, I will focus my attention on the star of the show – the Thanksgiving table. (Naturally, the most exciting “decorations” are the turkey and trimmings, but I think that a beautiful table makes every holiday even more special.)
Here are some tricks I plan to try this year, to make this the best Thanksgiving table ever!
Five Ways to Add Pizazz to Your Thanksgiving Table Setting
If you’ve already amassed a collection of brown and white transferware, or pottery in earth tones, you are ahead of the game. Since I have no traditional autumnal colors in my china collection (shocking, I know!), I’ve opted to use blue and white, with pops of orange provided by mini pumpkins and gourds.
If blue and white isn’t your style, use what you have and simply amp it up with seasonal color. Dusty pink paired with natural foliage accents, teal china with a burlap runner, or plain white with lots (and lots and lots) of gold. Your pop of color can be added with ribbon, napkins, or colored stemware.
After doing a deep dive on Thanksgiving table settings on Pinterest, the one thing that really stood out to me for creating the most lush, extravagant tablescape is the use of multiple layers. A tablecloth, placements and a runner? No problem! Ditto multiple layers of complementary or contrasting plates and bowls. More is just… more.
Plus, don’t forget to include some height on your table. Candlesticks in varying heights and grouped in odd numbers make a big impact. Tapers in hues other than simple white can add a festive feel. If you have a bit of time, twine candlesticks or candelabra with seasonal foliage for an over-the top look.
And, while you’re at it, don’t forget the chandelier! Faux fall leaves, vines, branches, and seasonal ribbon turn a ho hum lighting fixture into a work of art.
Thanksgiving is such a personal holiday. We each have unique things to be thankful for. So, make your table personal, too, with custom place cards, inspirational text, even photos. Show those around the table just how grateful you are to all be together this year.
