Rope Hammock: Enjoy a Mini Vacation… at Home

Garden hammock: Summer's essential LuxuryToday is National Hammock Day. And after a little research, I learned that the hammock actually dates back thousands of years to Central America. Back then, this type of netted bed was a simple, easy way to elevate people off of the ground, protecting them from animals and insects. In the 17th century, explorers brought the concept back to Europe. Quickly, the rope hammock was adapted for use on naval ships as an effective way to provide a comfy place to sleep and save deck space.

Today of course, a hammock is the ultimate symbol of luxurious relaxation. And I, for one, am more than ready to celebrate National Hammock Day!

A hammock is one of the best gifts I have ever received. My children gave me a festive green and white striped canvas version for Mother’s Day over a dozen years ago. It finally wore out, so I recently exchanged it for a traditional, all-weather rope hammock. And, it’s my favorite space in the garden! There’s something so tranquil and inviting about a hammock that simply beckons you to stop and relax. It’s like a mini vacation… at home. And, couldn’t we all use a little vacation right about now?

Of course, a hammock needs a few accessories to really make it the perfect place to read, snooze, or just daydream. A small table to hold drinks, snacks, and sunglasses is a must. Don’t forget a fluffy pillow. And, while a rope hammock is certainly cozy, it truly needs a blanket for maximum comfort (trust me!). I love this cozy plush throw from Marine Moon. At 70” x 90”, it’s large enough to completely wrap up in. Plus, it is made of 2-sided brushed, premium microfiber fabric. This means that both sides are luxuriously soft.

No hammock? No problem! Some of my favorites (both free standing and tree hung) can be found at Wayfair, Joss & Main and Enjoy!

What a beautiful hammock! I love the natural rope look of this one. Hammocks are so relaxing, my favorite place to read! I haven’t had one in years, though.
