According to The Crystal Council, amethyst is a variety of quartz and achieves its distinctive purple color from gamma irradiation and trace amounts of iron. Although most of the world’s supply of amethyst is currently mined in Brazil and Uruguay, the USA also has amethyst deposits in Maine, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Montana and Colorado.
I’ve actually had a lifelong love affair with amethyst. As a teen, I was given a beautiful amethyst bead bracelet by a beloved aunt, which I still wear often. And, I’ve added to my “collection” with amethyst necklaces and even more lovely bracelets, worn in multiples. But, amethyst earrings are one of my favorite ways to showcase this stunning gemstone. The vibrant color and sparkle are always so eye-catching. And, when paired with gleaming sterling silver, it’s a hard combination to beat.
