#Giveaway! Stunning Shantiva Copper Pitcher

Giveaway! Stunning Shantiva Copper PitcherEveryone starts the new year with big plans. Every year, as the last calendar page turns, I vow that this is the year I will get organized, exercise consistently, make more of an effort to stay in touch with friends… you get the idea! But in 2021, after enduring almost a year of the worst global health crisis in more than a century, I am determined to actually follow through and get healthier! That includes daily vitamins, taking online yoga classes and drinking copper water, among other plans.

Health Benefits of Copper

Although consuming copper water may be considered trendy today, the practice of “tamra jal” has existed in India for thousands of years. And, for good reason!

According to Medical News Today, “Copper is an essential trace mineral necessary for survival. It is found in all body tissues and plays a role in making red blood cells and maintaining nerve cells and the immune system. It also helps the body form collagen and absorb iron, and plays a role in energy production.”

The ancient Indian practice of storing water in a copper jug was believed to introduce copper to the body and produce a host of health benefits. And, modern science supports many of these claims.

For example, in a recent Healthline article, author Ariane Lang explains, “One of copper’s benefits appears to be backed by science — its antibacterial effect. Both old and recent evidence suggests that copper may be used as a water purification or sterilization system, as ancient Ayurveda [holistic medicine system from India] techniques recommended.”

However, copper water isn’t something you can purchase at a store or order online. But luckily, it’s easy to create your own by simply using a copper pitcher or jug, just like they did thousands of years ago. And, one of my favorite new finds is the stunning copper pitcher from Shantiva, pictured.

This pitcher helps create copper water, also known as alkaline water, naturally. Simply fill with water, let it sit on the kitchen counter overnight, and in the morning, your water is ready. You can also store your pitcher in the fridge if you prefer icy cold water.

What to Look for in a Copper Pitcher or Jug

Giveaway! Stunning Shantiva Copper PitcherA copper pitcher makes it oh-so-easy to enjoy copper water throughout the day (staying better hydrated is yet another one of my goals this year!). But, not all “copper pitchers” are created equally.

The copper pitcher from Shantiva is made of 100% pure, food-safe copper. This is absolutely essential because some pitchers have a stainless-steel lining, which does not allow you to enjoy any of the benefits of drinking from copper.

This beautiful pitcher is also so well constructed. Unlike inexpensive knock-off versions, the Shantiva pitcher is solid copper – not simply coated with copper, which will rub off in time. In addition, each pitcher is crafted from a single sheet of copper, so there are no joints or seams. It will last a lifetime, even with daily use.

Shantiva uses skilled artisans and traditional methods to handcraft these beautiful pieces. Each is unique and can truly be considered “functional art” for your kitchen.

When the pitcher arrives, it is brilliant copper, like a new penny. With use, copper will mellow and patina. This does not affect its use at all. But, if you prefer the bright copper look, simply sprinkle a pinch of salt on a slice of lemon, allow the salt to dissolve, and then gently rub it on the surface of the pitcher for a natural cleanser. Rinse and dry well. (For everyday use, simply hand wash. Do not use the dishwasher.)

Using a Copper Pitcher Safely

This copper water pitcher should be used for water only. The World Health Organization (WHO) has concluded that it is safe to ingest 2mg of copper per litre of water. Additionally, research shows that the water stored in a copper vessel (even for a significant period of time) absorbed less than 1/20th of that amount of copper, keeping it far below safe limits.

You should never serve anything acidic in a copper pitcher, because the acidity can make the copper leach into food. This includes lemonade, margaritas and sadly, a Moscow Mule. Again, this copper pitcher should be used for water only.

I learned that many other manufacturers (mostly based in India and selling on Amazon) sell copper pitchers with riveted handles. Because their handles are riveted rather than welded, the rivets create holes in the body of the pitcher. This results in leakage, which the manufacturers try to prevent by applying glue to the rivets.

Unfortunately, the glue that these manufacturers use is quite toxic and contaminates the water.

According to ancient Ayurvedic health principles, water stored in a copper jug (which is known as “tamra jal”) balances the three doshas in your body (vata, kapha and pitta) by gently infusing the water with the many health benefits of copper.
