Washi Tape Makes DIY Craft Projects Easy: Top 12 Ideas

Washi tape card and invitation ideasWashi tape, those colorful, whimsical tapes made from Japanese rice paper, are a DIY enthusiasts’ dream. Washi tape makes almost any DIY project so easy! From scrapbooking, to creating custom picture frames, to adorning just about anything. If you can unroll regular masking tape, you can create beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces for your home, or for use as gifts.

I find that Pinterest is a great source for ideas. Although the site is filled with inspiring, over-the-top washi tape creations on large surfaces such as cabinets, doors, and even walls, I personally like to use my washi tape in somewhat smaller doses. The charming prints are small. So, a few of my favorite projects include:

Cards and invitations. Tiny pennants are the perfect way to adorn thank you notes, cards and invitations. Simply fold washi tape over twine, ribbon or yarn, trim the edges into points (or use pinking sheers) and you have  a charming bunting embellishment. Or, use larger swaths for more color and impact.

Toppers for cakes or cupcakes. What could be more festive than bunting to top off your next celebratory cake?  Create bunting to reinforce your color scheme and anchor with bamboo skewers or striped straws. If you are really ambitious, use four skewers as anchor “poles” and a striped straw in the center to mimic a traditional Maypole. Adorable!

Gift wrapping, gift bags and tags. Plain white or brown Kraft paper bags and wrap are some of my go-to choices for holiday gift wrapping.  They are so adaptable and can be used for any holiday or event  – with the proper embellishment. Washi tape bunting, stripes, figures, or a colorful washi tape gift tag make ho-hum gift wrapping instantly Instagramable.

Flags and straws: Colorful drink stirrers and decorated straws elevate your next gathering and are so simple to create! They can also do double duty as drink identifiers. Or try tiny picks for hors d’oeuvres and desserts for a coordinated tablescape.

Other great washi tape ideas include:

  • Labeling for electronic cords
  • Custom binder clips and paper clips
  • Decorative wrap (in addition to plain wax paper) for homemade candy or soap

Note: I do not use washi tape for items or pieces that get a lot of handling or use. Although it looks cute, covering a phone case, notebook spine, or drawer pull is probably not a good idea in the long-term.

These are adorable ideas, and I’ve not yet crafted using washi tape. I have to put it on my New Year’s resolutions, this is a must try!!!!

Literally, the easiest craft projects ever! Washi tape is perfect for quarantine days when I am stuck inside; it’s fun to create something beautiful. (Plus, no messy clean up!)
