Fall Porch and Patio Decorating – Let’s Get Cozy!

Fall porch and patio decorating that will take you from September through Thanksgiving! On the East Coast, fall is just around the corner. And, as much as I hate to say goodbye to summer, I do love the change of seasons! Getting my outdoor space ready for fall entertaining requires a bit of effort. But, the novelty of outdoor fall gatherings, from bonfires to outdoor movie nights, more than outweighs the hard work. Here are some of our best Fall Porch and Patio Decorating tips to get you ready for a fall filled with friends, family and fun!

Snuggly Seating. Creating a cozy atmosphere outdoors starts with snuggly seating. Outdoor, all-weather couches are optimal for lounging. But, if you don’t have the space (or the budget) you can add comfy cushions and pillows to existing patio furniture. Marshall’s is one of my go-to stores for pillows of all shapes and sizes. No seating? Bring the indoors out… at least for the duration of the party!

Fabulous Flooring. Outdoor rugs take the chill off flagstone or brick patios and are visually warming, as well. A rug also defines and outdoor space and provides a sense of place. All weather versions can be left outdoors until the snows arrive. Wayfair has an incredible selection of outdoor rugs and you can easily shop by color, size, shape or price.

Fire it Up.  An outdoor fireplace is the perfect spot to gather. But, an inexpensive, mobile fire pit can also be a wonderful place to roast marshmallows, warm your hands, and enjoy some great conversation.

If you have the room, you can even dig a permanent pit in the year. Make sure you clear any grass or debris and line it thoroughly with rocks. And, no matter where your fire is, keep a garden hose handy just in case!

Lighting Variety. For outdoor events, choose different heights and vary the type of illumination for a cozy ambiance. Tea lights in Mason jars are extremely affordable and look best in masses. Strands of Edison bulbs overhead add a charming bistro effect. And, don’t forget fairy lights twined around tree branches.

Let’s Get Warm. For chilly evenings, blankets and throws are absolutely essential. Choose cozy chenille or plush fleece throw. A basket filled with spare mittens and gloves is also a welcome addition.

Festive Decorations. Piles of pumpkins (real or faux), buckets of mums, wooden crates, lanterns, and colorful bunches of dried corn all add a festive spirit to outdoor gatherings. Straw bales are not only decorative, but offer mobile seating options.
