Royal Wedding Countdown: How to choose the right hat

How to choose the right hatThe Brits are well-known for their love of stunning hats, which range from tiny, charming feathered fascinators, to elaborate, over the top flower embellished confections. And, for lucky attendees, the Royal Wedding offers an unparalleled opportunity to show off a truly “unique” hat!

I believe that purchasing a hat is a little like falling in love. Sometimes the appeal isn’t instantly apparent to the outside observer.

So, what kinds of hats are best?

First, large brimmed straw or sinamay hats are not only beautiful, they are practical as well. Attending an outdoor wedding or event? Throw on a wide-brimmed hat adorned with flowers, ribbons, or an oversized bow and… voila!  Instant sophistication. Plus, large brimmed straw hats offer great protection from the sun’s rays on a bright day.

Next, I love a seriously glamorous hat. Veiling and rhinestone accents elevate a simple suit or dress. Just don’t forget the bobby pins.

Last, America has finally embraced the fascinator. But, this style has been a staple of the British wardrobe… forever! If you’re not familiar with the term, a fascinator is really nothing more than a tiny work of art (flowers, ribbins, feathers) perched atop the head, firmly anchored with by a headband. It’s a lovely, elegant look and is perfect for a formal occasion, such as a wedding. Plus, a fascinator won’t obstruct the view of someone seated behind you!

Wondering where to start? If budget is no issue, then one of the best milliners alive today is Philip Treacy. Treacy is well-known for his memorable (and occasionally outrageous) designs. He is a favorite of many celebrities and Britain’s royal family.

But, you can also shop at all major department stores. Macy’s offers some very affordable, but lovely options including many selections from August Hats, as well as well as pretty versions by Nine West.

Etsy also has a vast selection of amazing hats by incredibly talented artisans. One of my favorites is QESC, which offers classic sinamay hats and jaunty fascinators.

Whichever style you choose, I say hats off to the Royal Wedding!
