Black and white is a perennial favorite with designers for a reason. The look is crisp, clean and coordinates with every other color of the rainbow. Since the look is so timeless, it makes life (or at least dressing for life!) easy. In fact, one of my favorite “last minute, go absolutely anywhere” outfits is a pair of black silk pants paired with a crisp white Jones of New York blouse. (Add a colored scarf or a statement necklace. Toss on a bright jacket or a casual cardi. Try red slingbacks or neutral heels. Black and white dressing just works on so many levels.)
Actually, much of my wardrobe falls into three categories: black, white, or a black and white pattern. I certainly have color, too, but I find that when pressed for time, I reach for the black and white. My coworkers probably think I have no imagination (and maybe it’s true). But for me, black and white is the ultimate “Garanimal” outfit.
Designers must agree that the combination is appealing, because today the stores are simply filled with black and white for spring. Windowpane plaid, funky polka dots, and even nautical stripes are everywhere. Here are a few of my faves all priced at $100 or less.
