This fall, Ralph Lauren released the book Ralph Lauren A Way of Living: Home, Design, Inspiration. So, as a lifelong fan of all things RLL, naturally, I needed a copy!
And this enormous coffee table book did not disappoint. It’s an incredible retrospective of Lauren’s signature interiors collections, which include many images of his own homes around the world, from a rustic ranch in Colorado, to a glitzy Fifth Avenue penthouse, to a seaside retreat in Montauk. This aspect, in particular, felt wonderfully personal – like an intimate glimpse into the history, life, and motivation of the designer who has been so inspirational for decades.
The book also explores the unique relationship between RLL fashion and interiors (menswear-inspired Oxford Cloth bedding, for example). I especially enjoyed the “early” Ralph Lauren (Highland plaid, cashmere cable knits, gray flannel) and how these looks were translated into beautiful, cozy interiors.
And the images! Ralph Lauren A Way of Living: Home, Design, Inspiration is jam packed with breathtaking photos from both fashion and interiors collections, that (even after 40 years) are so aspirational. In fact, that is one of the biggest takeaways. RLL designs, unlike so many others, are truly timeless. A Ralph Lauren burnished leather chair, sparkling crystal decanter, or tartan plaid highboy all look as lovely today as the day they were introduced.
As a visionary of the quintessential “American” look, Lauren is also immortalized in this book by prominent figures in culture, who speak about their own personal experiences with RLL design. (Oprah’s explanation, for example, of how she knew she had “made it” was when she had a linen closet full of Ralph Lauren towels!)
