Today is Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday celebration. Although, since the Queen’s actual date of birth is in April, you may be understandably confused! According to Wikipedia, “The sovereign’s birthday was first officially marked in the United Kingdom in 1748, for King George II. Since then, the date of the king or queen’s birthday has been determined… by the sovereign or governor or by statute laws passed by the local parliament.” So, this weekend the Queen will mark her official birthday with three days of pomp and pageantry in London. And, what better way to celebrate the best of Britain than by sporting one of its most iconic brands? I’m talking about Burberry, of course.
Although today the Burberry name is synonymous with classic British style, this was not always the case. Thomas Burberry opened his namesake store in 1856 in Basingstoke, England as a curtain draper. By 1880, however, he had patented gabardine fabric, which became the foundation of the Burberry empire. Burberry outerwear was soon a staple of the British military. And, his classic-in-the-making wool tartan check was introduced in 1920. The rest, as they say, is history!
Today’s Burberry is so much more than just wool checked scarves, utilitarian Wellies, and trusty trenchcoats. Above are a few of my personal faves. But, Burberry offers so much more — from trendy fringed moto jackets, to stylish laser cut suede heels, to gorgeous snakeskin belts! To see the entire line, visit Burberry.
Wishing a very Happy Birthday to Queen Elizabeth. Long may she reign.
