The Soothing Company: Bonsai and Much More

The Soothing Company: Bonsai and Much More. The Soothing Company offers thousands of soothing products for your home and garden. Everything from water features to bonsai trees to a wall aquarium.

I am a self-professed gardening aficionado. Creating a lush, fragrant and tranquil environment is a joy to me – not only because my family can appreciate the end result, but because the process itself is so rewarding! Several of my closest friends are similarly devoted and together we pore over seed catalogs, share clippings, and visit the annual Philadelphia Flower Show, Wilmington Flower Market, and famed Longwood Gardens for inspiration.

But winter on the East Coast is hard on the garden enthusiast. Dreary weather starts as early as October and surprise snows have been known to arrive as late as April! There are only so many gardening books I can thumb through before I need to actually do something!

That’s why I was so thrilled to learn about a wide variety of bonsai trees available from The Soothing Company!

The art of creating bonsai is one of those frequently misunderstood concepts. It’s often confused with dwarfing, but bonsai landscapes do not use genetically dwarfed trees.

Bonsai trees are actually derived from regular stock and seeds. Instead of dwarfing, creating and maintaining a bonsai tree requires cultivation techniques – pruning, root reduction, potting, defoliation, and grafting.

The result is a small tree that mimics the shape and style of mature, full-size trees. And, according to the experts at world-renowned Longwood Gardens, “the artistic composition of the bonsai is a result of the partnership between the grower and the plant.”

The Chinese were the first to create the miniature trees (and landscapes) that we now know as bonsai. The process is believed to have started in the Han Dynasty. But, between 794 – 1191 A.D. Buddhist monks brought bonsai to Japan, where the process flourished. In the 1950’s Yuji Yoshimura of Tokyo, Japan, a famous grower, helped popularize bonsai in the western world.

I actually have two bonsai trees. A “Money Tree” that my sweet niece Megan gave me as a gift back in 2004, and a gorgeous, new flowering Gardenia Tree from The Soothing Company (pictured).

The Gardenia Tree (Gardenia Jasminoidy Radicans) is an absolutely beautiful example of bonsai. It will bloom from March through June and has stunning white flowers. Since it’s only between 6” – 8” tall, it’s also the perfect tree for indoors – even if you have a small space. And, I love the soft fragrance. Gardenia is one of the leading scents used in perfume manufacturing for centuries! Retail $40

But what I love best is caring for my bonsai trees. The experience is extremely calming – something I definitely need! If you simply follow instructions (water, heat, sunlight, etc.), bonsai can be surprisingly easy to keep.

And, properly cared for, bonsai can actually outlive their owners! In fact, the Sandai Shogun no Matsu (translates to third generation Tokugawa’s pine) is a bonsai specimen that has been passed down through the line of Japanese emperors for at least 500 years!

Bonsai from The Soothing Company aren’t quite that old, but the range of options is tremendous. You can choose from jade, pomegranate, gingko, rosemary and so many more. Visit The Soothing Company to see the entire line of beautiful bonsai trees and accessories.

In addition to bonsai, The Soothing Company offers thousands of soothing products for your home and garden.   Everything from from fountains and water features, to hammocks, to wall aquariums, to lounge chairs, plus so much more – everything you need to create a peaceful sanctuary in your home.
